This Week's Sunday School Lesson, :God's Sovereignty", Romans 9:9-21, 5/9/2021

THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD

Romans 9:9-21

THE BIRTH OF TWO NATIONS; ONE BLESSED AND ONE HATED

V:9 For this is the word of promise: "At this time I will come and Sarah shall have a son."

10 And not only this, but when Rebecca also had conceived by one man, even by our father Isaac  11 (for the children not yet being born, nor having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works but of Him who calls), 12 it was said to her, "The older shall serve the younger."  13 As it is written, "Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated."

A. God’s ways are not our ways.

1. God’s thoughts are not our thoughts.

2. We cannot always understand God’s reasoning,

3. Because we cannot understand His ways, we must humbly accept

Them until He reveals an understanding to us,

B. God works according to His divine will which is far above our understanding.

1. Why God could hate a baby that had not been born is beyond my

Understanding.

2. God looked forward and saw two nations in Rebecca.

3. One nation He would bless with His commandments and one nation

Who would reject Him,

a. Esau was the father of the Edomites

b. Esau is considered the ancestor of Rome.

4. In Jacob, God saw the nation of Israel,

5. Since God knows the end from the beginning, we must trust His

Judgment.

C. When we make decisions, we hope the outcome will be beneficial to us.

1. God's decisions are beneficial to some and a curse to others.

2. Since God has elected those who will love him before the foundation

Of the earth, any decision He makes works to their good.

3. The nation of Israel a descendant of Jacob would be given the law

Which teaches us the righteousness of God.

GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY STATED

V:14 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? Certainly not! 15 For He says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whomever I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I will have compassion."  16 So then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy.

A. God Has all authority over His creation.

1. He is sovereign and cannot commit any unrighteousness.

2. God’s end game is focused on the new heaven and the new earth.

3. In the end, it is God’s chosen who will enter into the New

Heaven with gloried bodies.

B. It is the mercy of God to allow sin to enter into His perfect creation

So that he could begin the process of redemption.

1. God mercy allowed Lucifer, one of His ark angels to corrupt

Himself so sin would enter into the realm of man.

2. Just as many of God’s holy angels corrupted themselves

God knew at some point man would corrupt himself.

3. When faced with temptations, we cannot know all consequences.

But God does.

4. God knew Adam’s sin would cast mankind into a lifetime of

degeneration.

              5. Ge provided the promise of a savior in the garden of  Eden,

GOD’S SOVEREIGNTY ILLUSTRATED

V:17 For the Scripture says to the Pharaoh, "For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I may show My power in you, and that My name may be declared in all the earth."  18 Therefore He has mercy on whom He wills, and whom He wills He hardens.

A. The pharaoh of Egypt  was chosen by God to defy Him so His power would be

Glorified in his disobedience.

1. Scripture says the pharaoh’s heart was hardened by God each time Moses

Came to him with the demand to let Israel go to worship God.

2. It was on the tenth request after the death of every firstborn male in Egypt

That Pharaoh let the Israelites leave Egypt.

3. THE Paraoah changed His mind after the Israelites were in the desert.

4. Moses parted the Red Sea, the Israelites walked through.

5. Pharaoh's army pursued in the Red sea and all were drawn.

B. There are some who God sustains in their sin so they die in their sin.

1. God uses the sinfulness of man to show his power and authority.

2. He did not cause the pharaohs sin but used it to show the Israelites

His glory.

3. In the desert, the Israelites would need to trust God to get to the

Promise land.

GOD IS RIGHTEOUS IN ALL HIS WAYS

V:19 You will say to me then, "Why does He still find fault? For who has resisted His will?" 20 But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed it, "Why have you made me like this?"

21 Does not the potter have power over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for honor and another for dishonor?

A. God is sovereign. He made all of us.

1. It is His business to do what He wants with us whom He created.

2. We have no say in what God decides to do with us.

B. It is by His grace and mercy that He chose an elect to be part

Of the body of Christ.

1. Because of Adam, We were born in sin and shaped in

Iniquity.

2. We were enemies of God, yet because of His grace and mercy

He saw fit to redeem us with the death of His Son.

C. In the womb of Racheal, God separated two nations;

One He would bless and one He would curse.

1. Neither unborn baby had the mind to do anything good

Or bad.

2. To understand His right to as He pleases, God used the

The example of clay in a potter's hands.

a. The potter can make one vessel for honor and

One for dishonor.

b. The potter can take what is his and destroy it,

And be within his rights.

3. Since God is the creator, He has the right to do with us

As He pleases.

4. We do not have the right to question God’s judgment.

5. If we question the bad God allows, we have to also question

The good He allows.

6. The best we can do is be thankful for God’s love and honor

Him with our obedience.

THANK GOD FOR CHOOSING US FOR HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS
