This Week's Sunday School Lesson, "Who Do You Say Jesus Is", Luke 9:18-27, 2/2/2010

WHO DO YOU SAY JESUS IS?

Luke 9:18-27

WHO IS JESUS TO THE WORLD?
V:18. Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, "Who do the crowds say I am?"
19 They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life."
A. There are some discussions that should be held with small groups.
     1. There are some discussions that should be held with believers only.
     2. What I believe about Jesus can be enlighten by others who believe.
     3. Some non believers will try to convince you that there is no God
or try to persuade you to their current opinion.
B. It is apparent that the disciples had heard what others said about the Jesus
     they followed.
    1. It is also apparent that the disciples had discussed among themselves
what others said about their leader.
    2. It is also apparent that what others said, did not change their beliefs.
C. Those who don’t know Jesus, have an opinion about Him.
    1. Religious folk who have no relationship with Jesus will say He is
everything but the Son of God.
    2. Bible study with other believers is important to your spiritual growth.

WHO IS JESUS TO YOU?
20 "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?"
Peter answered, "The Christ of God."
A. It is not important what others say about Jesus. It is what you
     believe that is important.
   1. What momma or daddy believe want get you in to heaven.
   2. What others believe may strengthen or weaken your belief.
But it up to you to chose Jesus as your savior.
B. It is not what others say. But what you say Jesus is that counts.
   1. There ought to be some unshakeable evidence that Jesus is God.
   2. How did you arrive at your conclusion that Jesus is Lord?
   3. No one comes to Jesus unless he is drawn by the Father.  John 6:44
       a. God draws each of us in different ways.
       b. The disciples were trained in Old Testament teaching to look
            for the messiah.  John 1:41
       c. Their training in the Jewish synagogues was the way God drew
            them to Himself.
   4. God drew me to Himself through my parents who took me to church
from a baby until I left home for college.
   5. The evidence that I have that Jesus is God, is the experiences that I have
had in life that confirms His Word.
    6. I can see God’s power and glory in everyday events.
        a. The sunshine and the rain are His doings.
        b. The storms and the calm times are His doings.
        c. I have never seen man make air, but it is all around us.
     7. There are three that testify that Jesus is Lord, the Word, The prophets
and the Holy Spirit.  John 5:39, John 15:26, Acts 10:43
     8.  Since I cannot understand the scriptures on my own, God uses the
Holy Spirit to enlighten me.    John 14:26, 1 Cor 2:14
     9. The evidence that I have that Jesus is God, is when I read the
Scriptures and they are not foolishness but made plain to me.

SALVATION IN THE FULLNESS OF TIME
V:21 Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone. 22 And he said, "The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life."
A. There is a time and place for everything.
     1. According to the text, Jesus did not want it broadcasted that He was the
         Messiah (anointed one).   Isaiah 61:1
     2. The Israelites would have tried to make Him King according to the
prophecy of  2 Samuel 7:12-13 or Micah 5:2.
     3. John 6:15 record Israel attempt to make Jesus king.
Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by
force,  withdrew again to a mountain by himself. “
     4. The time to announce Jesus kingship was just prior to His crucifixion
when He rode into Jerusalem on a donkey.
 B. Jesus gave His disciples the train of events that would lead to His
      resurrection.
      1. Each event was the fulfillment of an Old Testament prophecy.
          a. He would be rejected by the Jewish leaders and Chief priest.
              Psalms 118:22-24
          b. He would suffer     Isaiah 53: 4-6
          c. Jesus would be killed       Genesis 22:1-18
          d. Jesus would be resurrected        Isaiah 53:10-11
      2. For Jesus to be our salvation He planned His death on the cross.
          Isaiah 53:5

A PERSONAL DECISION TO FOLLOW CHRIST
V:23. Then he said to them all: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.
A. There is a cost for salvation.
    1. Jesus set the example for us to follow.
    2. He sacrificed His life for the atonement of our sins.  Isaiah 53:4-6
       1 John 2:2
B. To be a disciple of Jesus we have to give up ourselves for His
     righteousness.  Luke 14:26, Matthew 6:33, Col 1:18
   1. The evidence of our love for Jesus shows up in our service.
        Hebrews 6:10,  James 2:18-19
   2. Since Christ is in me, I am dead to me and alive in Him.  Roman 8:10

A PERSONAL DECISION TO REJECT CHRIST
25 What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit
       his very self?
  A. The pursuit of happiness is everyone’s dream.
       1. By happiness we mean having stuff and more stuff.
       2. By happiness we may mean having money and more money.
       3. The problem with happiness is that it is base on circumstances
           that are constantly under change.
       4. Happiness is often measured by what others have obtained.
B. Jesus does not promote happiness. He promotes joy.
      1. The joy Jesus promotes come through a relationship with Him.
      2. Joy results from our obedience to God’s commands

John 15:10-12
If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.

CONSEQUENCE OF REJECTING CHRIST
26 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
A. Most of the world does not accept an authority over their lives
    greater than themselves.
   1. In the preceding verses, Jesus gave us the completion of His
       plan of redemption for mankind.
   2. His voluntary death was for the atonement of our sins.
   3. He was resurrected on the third day with all power for the
       salvation of mankind.
 B. Man is given the choice to accept Him as his personal savior.
     1. Those who accept Christ will be receive into His glory.
     2. Those who reject Christ will condemned to the eternal hell
C. The judgment of man will be by the Father and witness by
     His holy angels.

THE GLORY OF OUR REDEMPTION
V:27.  I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death
before they see the kingdom of God.
 A. Some commentary writers believe that Jesus is speaking of Peter, James
      And John .
     1. Eight day later they would go to the mountain with Jesus and
witness His transformation while speaking with Moses and
         Elijah.
     2. The three disciples would get a glimpse of heaven.
     3. These three disciples would met their deaths proclaiming
          Gospel of Jesus Christ.
B. For their encouragement and conformation of their faith, Peter, James and
     John got a message from the Father;
     Luke 9:34-36
While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and they
were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 A voice came from the cloud,
saying, "This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him."
   1. Sometimes when you are meditating on the Word, God will
give you a clearer understanding that will confirm your faith.
   2. When you walk in the light of Jesus, His Word will be illuminated.

28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. 29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. 30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, 31 appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As the men were leaving Jesus

This Week's Sunday School Lesson, "Faith Comes By Hearing And Hearing By Jesus", Luke 8:4-15, 1/19/2020

FAITH COME BY HEARING AND HEARING FROM
JESUS

Luke 8:4-15

V:4 While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, he told this parable: 5 "A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up. 6 Some fell on rock, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown."
When he said this, he called out, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."
9 His disciples asked him what this parable meant. 10 He said, "The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that,
"'though seeing, they may not see;
though hearing, they may not understand.
11 "This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God. 12 Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. 13 Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. 14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life's worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. 15 But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.
16 "No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. 17 For there is no

A parable is a physical example of a spiritual reality.
Teaching should be done on a level that the audience can understand.
Jesus used the farmer as His example which could be understood by all who heard because of their farming background.

Understanding the spiritually meaning was only left to the Lord
who directed His enlightenment to only specific people in the crowd.

Not everyone who came to Jesus came to hear the Word of God.
Some came to be entertained. Many came to be healed of their sickness.
Some came to find fault with Jesus and His disciples.

Notice it was only Jesus disciples who ask the meaning of the parable,
What happen to the large crowd? They came for the show, not for
Bible Study.

The Lord presents us with 4 situations or mind sets in which the Word is
presented and received or rejected. He presents with His divine
Providence the Word of Truth.

Though out the New Testament, Jesus gives us scriptures that support His
reasons for those who will understand and those who will be left in the
dark.

No one comes to me unless he is drawn by the Father   John 6:44

The world cannot receive the Word because it is foolish to them
1 Corinthians 2:14

My sheep know my voice and they follow me   John 10:27

What the Father has given me, I lose none               John 6:39

God chose those He will save before the foundation of the earth.
Ephesians 1:4

Jesus present  4 classes of individuals who are exposed to the light.
Three reject the light and remain in darkness. One received the light
and is blessed.

God insures that everyone is exposed to the Word.
Since God created everything, He sets the conditions for which everyone
is exposed to the Word.

Everyone having heard the Word, is given the responsibility to respond to the Word. Everyone is given the will to accept the Word or reject the Word.

HEARD THE WORD, BUT LEFT IN DARKNESS
(1) V:5.A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up.

The path that the seed fell on first is your hard core unbeliever.
He is unaffected by the Word of God. He is so deep in darkness that
Light does not shine in his heart. He, like us was born in sin and shaped in
iniquity. This set of individuals are left in their unredeemable state.

RECEIVED THE WORD BUT UNAFFECTED
(2) .V: 6 Some fell on rock, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture.
The second group, the rock, that seed fell on, heard the Word, received
It with joy, but were unaffected by it. There are people that just want to
hear some new thought to intrigue their imagination but remain unchanged.

ALMOST CHRISTIAN WHO CHOSE DARKNESS
(3)V: 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants.
The third group , the seed that fell among the thorns, heard the Word and
received it with joy. However they were so involved in their problems
That could not see the truth in the Word.
There are those who come to Church just hear a feel good word.
They do not want to hear that the blessing of God require a change
In attitude, lifestyle  and includes hardships.  When the Word does not
meet their expectations, they quit listening to the Word.

REDEEMED BY THE WORD
(4) V:8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown."

This forth Group was called by God to be included in the body of Christ.
As they were being drawn to Jesus, a change was made in their hearts to
receive the Word and accept Jesus as Lord and Savior.

While it may seem that the seed drop from the farmers hand  on
poor soil was by chance, I suggest that it was by God’s divine purpose.
Since the farmer is God himself, nothing is by chance.
Scriptures tells us that  everyone was not chosen to be redeemed

V: 10 He said, "The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that,
"'though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.

As stated by the Bible Knowledge Commentary

Luke 8:11-15
As Jesus' ministry progressed, it was evident that each of these groups surfaced: (1) The Pharisees and religious leaders refused to believe. (2) Some people rallied around Jesus because of His miracles of healing and feeding but refused to stay with His message (e.g., John 6:66). (3) Others, such as the rich ruler (Luke 18:18-30), were interested in Jesus but would not accept Him because of the strong pull of materialism. (4) Others followed Him and were committed to His Word regardless of the cost (e.g., 8:1-3).

Each of us have probably gone through each of the stages Jesus
discussed.
There have been decisions we have made that led to hardships
because we would not listen.

There have been times we have heard the Word and intended to
follow it, but got side tracked by our own fleshly desires.

There are times when we were excited about God’s Word until
trouble came into our lives and we decided to trust our own judgment.

In order to grow spiritually we have trust God in all situations.
Those who grow spiritually, believe the Word, act on the Word
Become ministers of the Word. The blessing of Word flow in
Good times and bad times.

It is because of God’s grace that we were chosen to be in the fourth group.
It is because of God’s mercy that He tolerated our disobedience
and allowed us to grow spiritually.

This Week's Sunday School Lesson, "Selected To Serve Jesus",Luke 6:12-`19, 1'/2'2020

SELECTED TO SERVE JESUS

Luke 6:12-20

COMMUNICATING WITH GOD THROUGH PRAYER
V:12.  One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.
A. Jesus set the standard for communicating with the Father.
     1. He went to a place where He could be alone with God.
     2. He prayed all night.
B. There are times in our lives when a short prayer want do.
     1. There are times when we really don’t know what to pray for.
     2. Sometimes long prayers will help us clear our mind and
put some perspective on our situation.
     3. The longer the prayer, the more time God has to intervene in our
          thought process.
     4. Directions from God will come to you quietly as you pray to Him.
     5. There have many times after prayer and I fallen asleep , that God
gives me His answers or directions.

LET YOUR DECISIONS BE GOD DIRECTED
V:13 When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles: 14 Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, 15 Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, 16 Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
A. Before we make any important decision, God should be consulted first.
    1. We see the outside of man, but God sees the hearts.
    2. We know what man has done, but God knows his motives.
    3. God, from the beginning has decided each man’s worth.
B. The meaning of Biblical names may give us an indication of God’s
     thoughts.
     1. Peter; a rock or stone
     2. Andrew;    a strong man
     3. James;      same as Jacob, that supplants, undermines
     4. John;    the grace or mercy of God
     5. Philip;    war like, a lover of horses
     6. Bartholomew;     a son that suspends
     7. Matthew;     given, a reward
     8. Thomas;    a twin
     9. James son of Alphaeus;      a thousands, learned, chief

   10.  Simon called Zealot;   that hears, that obeys:  full of real,
          a Cannanite
   11.  Judas son of James, surname Thadaeus
   12. Judas Iscariot;   a man from kerioth, the one who betrayed Jesus.
C. What get from the names is that each of Jesus disciples were different,
     with different personalities and gifts.
   1. Jesus had many disciples, but few were selected as apostles.
   2. The word apostle means a delegate or ambassador of the Gospel or
        commissioner of Christ.
   3. The apostles witness the death and resurrection of
Jesus and were selected by Him.
Today there are no apostles because none of us witness His death
       and resurrection.
   4.  I can imagine that part of Jesus prayer to the Father was the selection of
        His apostles.
   5. His apostles would be the start of the Church after His crucifixion
       and resurrection.

REACH OUT TO JESUS
V:17 He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coast of Tyre and Sidon, 18 who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases.
A. The job of a good leader is to teach you how to do the job.
     1. Jesus give His newly appointed apostles examples of the work they
         would be required to do.
     2. Serving Jesus is dealing with needs of the people.
     3. The gifts that Jesus has provided us are to be used to give Him
          glory through service.
     4. Those who serve Jesus at times will be bombarded with requests.
     5. We have to rely on God to give us the strength to get through
          each day of service.

B. Of the many reasons, to come to Jesus, He points out two for the
     Church.
     1. We come to hear the Word of truth presented by Jesus.
     2. We come to be healed and made whole.
C. The popularity of Jesus had spread to a large area in a short period
of time. A distance of about 75 miles from Galilee was the partial
     radius of influence.
    1. A walk time of 3 to 5 days to get to Jesus was not uncommon.
        a. We must keep in mind, that there were no trains, cars
            or buses.
        b. The means of transportation was donkeys and walking.
        c. We must also keep in mind, that there were no telephones.
             TV or internet.
        d. The only means of communication was word of mouth.
        f. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.
    2. Nothing should stop us from getting to Jesus.
    3. He has the solution to all our needs.
    4. No one was required to change to get blessed by Jesus.
    5. It was their desire to be with Jesus that got them blessed.
    6. Since the Lord does not change, He expects us to come as we
are and be blessed by His presence.

COME TO JESUS JUST AS YOU ARE
V:18b. Those troubled by evil spirits were cured, 19 and the people all tried
to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all.
A. The Lord is no respecter of person.
    1. He did not judge the sins of the crowd, though they were many.
    2. Everyone in the crowd was healed who came to be healed.
B. Anytime you are in the presence of the Lord, there is an opportunity
     For a breakthrough.
    1. Everyone who reached out to Jesus was healed.
    2. All we have to do is reach out to Jesus to be noticed by Him.
    3. His power flows to you because of your reaching.
C. The right place to be on Sunday Morning is God’s house.
    1. The right place to be on Wednesday night is God’s house.
    2. You never know when God is going to open up the windows
of heaven and bless every hand that is extended to Him.
    3. Jesus is in the mist when believers come together to worship Him.

THANK GOD FOR THE PRESENCE OF HIS SON

This Week's Sunday School Lesson, "Faith Comes By Hearing", Luke 5:27-39

FAITH COME BY HEARING

Luke 5:27-39

JESUS SELECTED YOU TO CHANGE
V:27 After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. "Follow me," Jesus said to him, 28 and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.
A. Jesus can take you out of the situation you are in.
    1. Jesus will put in a new direction.
    2. Levi (Matthew) was a tax collector for the Roman Government.
    3. He was in a profession of dishonest men.
    4. They stole from the people by over charging them for their
taxes. They kept the over charged amount for themselves
    5. Matthew a Jew, made his living by stealing from his own
        people.
    6. Tax collectors were hated by the Jewish community.
B. God does not tell us the full conversation between Jesus and
    Matthew.
   1. God does not tell us what frame of mind Matthew was in
when Jesus showed up at his station.
   2. We don’t know if Jesus was there to pay taxes or not.
   3. All we know is Jesus command at the end of the conversation.
   4. We know Matthew’s response was to leave his job and
       follow Jesus.
C. Let me suggest that maybe Matthew had heard John the Baptist
message to tax collectors to charge only what was due.
    1. Maybe Matthew reflected on John the Baptist message of
repentance to be saved.  Luke 3:12
    2. Maybe Matthew was tired of the guilt he knew and being
        hated by his community.
    3. Maybe Matthews heart had been prepared by John the Baptist
and he was ready for a change when Jesus came to his booth.
    4. When Jesus comes into your life, He will set you on the right
        path.

CELEBRATE YOUR NEW LIFE WITH JESUS
V:29 Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them. 30 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and 'sinners'?"

A. It would be nice for believers to throw a Jesus Party and
invite non believers, friends and relatives.
    1. Notice, Levi does not apologize for his past, he just moves
forward with his new life with Jesus.
    2. You cannot change your past, but you can affect today.
    3. The first people to proclaim your new life with Jesus is your
         associates and family.
    4. Those who don’t like your change, becomes the conversation for
         change.
    4. Levi had been blessed with a house and wealth from his
previous occupation as a tax collector.
    5. His house became the place for people to meet Jesus.
    6. Whatever we have, ought to be used for people to meet Jesus.
B. When you throw a party, many people will show up to eat.
    1. It is up to the host to make sure Jesus is the main course.
    2. The Lord will make sure distractors of the Gospel show up.
    3. Those who don’t know the Lord make good conversation
        for Bible Study.

BIBLE STUDY BEGINS WHEN YOU PROCLAIM JESUS
V:31 Jesus answered them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."
33 They said to him, "John's disciples often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking."
A. Self righteous folk know the Word and know what is going
     on in the Church.
   1. It is useful for people who oppose the church to voice their opinion
       about the Church.
   2. Once we know what people think about Church, we have direction
from God to explain the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
   3. Notice Jesus used the self righteous objections against eating
with sinners to explain the need for righteousness.
B. If you let people talk long enough, they will tell you what on their
     mind.
    1. It is up to you to listen objectively in love, to determine the best
        way to respond.
    2. Jesus used a medical example to explain a spiritual need.
        a. If you are well you don’t need a doctor.
        b. If you are in sin you need doctor Jesus.
        c. Since faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God,
those in sin need our testimony about what Jesus did to get us
            out of sin.
      d. Sometime people need a different interpretation of the same
scripture to get the correct understanding.

A TIME TO CELEBRATE AND A TIME TO FAST
V:34 Jesus answered, "Can you make the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? 35 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; in those days they will fast."
A. The second objection of the Pharisees was the lack of fasting by Jesus
     disciples.
    1. When there is a wedding party, no one fast. It is a time
         of celebration.
    2. Jesus explained a deeper meaning of His presence.
        a. We feast on the Word in Bible Study.
        b. When two or more are gathered together in Jesus name,
             He is in the mist.
        c. While Jesus was with His disciples, they had a daily diet of
             the Word.
   3. There is a time when we need to meditate on the Word we
        received.
        a. Meditation is the time of fasting in a sense. We put aside
all hindrances, i.e. daily activities and focus solely on the Word.
        b. It is in our meditations when we let the Lord give us enlightenment
through the power of the Holy Spirit.
        c. One of the jobs of the Holy Spirit is to teach us the Word.

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW
V:36 He told them this parable: "No one tears a patch from a new garment and sews it on an old one. If he does, he will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old.
A. There are times when we need more that one example to get the full
      meaning of scripture.
     1. The old garment is the law.
     2. The new garment is grace.
     3. The law was given as a tutor until grace came.
     4. The law condemns.
     5. Grace saves.
B. The Pharisees were experts on the law.
     1. They had trouble with grace because it came in the form of Jesus.
their long awaited Messiah which they could not recognize.
     2. To them, Jesus was just another uneducated man talking
          none sense.
     3. The Bible tells us the Word is spiritually inspired and foolishness
          to the world.
     4. The law and grace don’t mix.
          a. The law requires works for repentance.
          b. Grace is the free gift from God through Jesus Christ
               that requires only faith.
      5. The Pharisees was stuck on the law because it gave them
           power and authority.
      6. Grace eliminates man’s power and authority and focuses
on the one true power and authority, which is Jesus.

A PHYSICAL EXAMPLE OF A SPIRITUAL TRUTH
V:37 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins, the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for he says, 'The old is better.'"
A. The New wine is the teachings  of Jesus.
     1. The old wine was the is the law.
     2. The old wine, the law, required a sacrifice each time there was sin.
     3. The new wine, grace is the one time, sacrifice of Jesus for sins of all
          people for all times.

B. The Bible Exposition Commentary explains this verse as follows

    Luke 5:37-39
The wineskins (vv. 37-39). If unfermented wine is put into brittle old
wineskins, the gas will burst the skins and both the skins and the wine will
be lost. The new life of the Spirit could not be forced into the old
wineskins of Judaism. Jesus was revealing that the ancient Jewish religion
was getting old and would soon be replaced (see Heb 8:13).

THANK GOD FOR THE NEW WINE
