Bible Study Series: The Early Life Of Jesus: Luke 2:1-17

 THE EARLY LIFE OF JESUS

Luke 2:1-17

In studying God’s Word, we need a method of study that helps us

get the most out of scripture. Here is what I was taught in my seminary

classes.

        O   Observe the text

                 Who wrote it?

                 Why was it written

                 Who was it written to?

                 What is it about?

                 When was it written

      I     Investigation

If there is anything about the text you don’t understand,

               stop and get answers.

The Bible interprets itself. Look for other scriptures about

              the subject.

             Uses online commentaries.

Look at sermons on the subject

   A     Application

How does this topic apply to your life?

What can you learn from it?

How will this scripture help you in daily living?

We don’t spend much time talking about the childhood of Jesus.

Until the age of 12 God focused on Mary and Joseph

I think it is worth our time to look at what we can gain from

The parenting of Mary and Joseph.

HIS BIRTH

Luke 2:8-12

8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.

The notification of the birth of Jesus was given first to shepherds in the field.

Jesus, Himself is the chief Shepherd of all Christians.

Why were they there?

Why shepherds and not religious leaders?

Bethlehem means "house of bread" in Hebrew. The town was known for its grain fields running down its slopes. After the harvest, shepherds were welcome to bring their animals into the fields to eat the remaining grain and stubble. In return, the sheep and goats fertilized the fields for the next planting season. In the first century Judea, being a shepherd was considered a lowly profession. These were the social outcasts. That's what makes this next account in the Gospel of Luke so special.  (DriveThrough History)

Jesus is the bread of life.   John 6:21

OUR POSITION

We can learn from the characteristics of a shepherd

     They have a low position

     They work in the field

They are guardians of the flock

     They worked in harsh conditions

They are leaders of the flock

They are defenders of the flock

     They tend the flock 24/7.

These are all the characteristics of our Lord and Savior.

The Lord identifies with the poor, the common man, the hard-working, the humble

OUR PRAISE

The Angels gave notification to the shepherds of Jesus' birth

Then taught us how to praise the Lord

Luke 2:16-18

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

The Shepherds investigated the Word, then spread the Word

Missed opportunity.  The community didn’t seek Jesus

HIS DEDICATION TO THE FATHER

Luke 2:21

21 On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise him, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he had been conceived.

8th Day Jesus was circumcised according to the law

     Purification

     Obedience

     Consecration

The naming of Jesus    The salvation of Jehovah

Luke 2:22-24

When the time of their purification according to the Law of Moses had been completed, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, "Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord"), 24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: "a pair of doves or two young pigeons."

40th day Mary presented Jesus in the temple

      Purification of Mary

Dedication of the firstborn to the Lord   Colossians 1:15

OUR WORSHIP

Matthew 2:1-2

2 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."

The Wise men taught us how to worship the Lord

WHY WERE THEY CALLED WISE MEN?

1. THEY WERE ASTRONOMERS     THEY STUDIED THE STARS They saw a

different star

2. THEY WERE MATHEMATICIANS     They were able to determine where the star was pointing

3. THEY WERE BIBLICAL SCHOLARS  They knew Bible scripture   They knew the star represented

                                                                                                                   a King who was born

                                                                                                                   Numbers   24:17

4. THEY WERE COURAGEOUS             They told a king they were looking for the new king of

                                                                     Jews

5. THEY WERE INVESTIGATORS         They came to prove scripture

6. THEY WERE GODLY MEN                THEY CAME TO WORSHIP THE NEW KING

7. THEY WERE DETERMINED             They didn’t rest until they found the king

8. THEY WERE GENEROUS                 THEY BROUGHT GIFTS

9. THEY CAME TO WORSHIP              They fell down and worshiped

                                                                  Jesus  Matt 2:2. 2:11

9. THEY WERE SUBMISSIVE TO THE SPIRIT     They were guided by the spirit.

                                                                                      Left Bethlehem without telling Herod

10. THEY WERE OBEDIENT

11. THEY WERE JOYFUL

WHO WERE THE MAGI

The Magi regained power under Xerxes and were consulted by him. They formed the highest portion of the king's court, the council about the king's person. Gradually the term came to represent divining impostors.

However, Philo uses it in a good sense: "men who gave themselves to the study of nature and contemplation of the divine perfection, worthy of being counselors of kings." So in Matthew 2:1, it is used in the better sense of "wise men," at once astronomers and astrologers "from the E.," i.e. the. N.E., the region toward the Euphrates from whence BALAAM (which see) came (Numbers 23:7; 22:5). Balaam's prophecy seems to have been known to them: "there shall come a star out of Jacob, and a scepter shall arise out of Israel." Accordingly, the very guide they look to is a star (a meteor probably), and the question they ask is "where is He that is born King of the Jews?" Moreover, Daniel, "chief of the Magi," had foretold Messiah's kingdom (Daniel 2:44; 9:25); naturally, the Magi ("wise men") looked for the kingdom and the king among the people of him whose fame as a Magian they had heard of. Zoroaster's predictions led them to look for Zosiosh, the Head of the kingdom who should conquer Ahriman and raise the dead. Their presents, "gold, frankincense, and myrrh," were the usual gifts of subject nations

When the wise men got to Jesus, Mary was in a house. Jesus had grown to be a young child

He could have been 2 years old

Matthew 2:16

16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.

IGNORANT OR WISE YOUR CHOICE

The church folk was given Good News about the long-awaited Messiah. They were not affected.

They made no effort to find Jesus.

The community had three opportunities to find Jesus.

      1. The Shepherds announced His birth on the day of His birth

      2. The Simoen and Anna praised Jesus in the Temple 40 days after His birth

during the dedication to the Lord

     3. 2 years after Jesus’s birth, the Wise men gained an audience with King Herod,

asking for the location of the King of The Jews. They saw a star announcing His birth.

King Herod demanded the church leaders search the scriptures to determine

         the birth of Jesus.

The Jewish community and the Jewish leaders did not search for Jesus.

They did not take the birth of Jesus seriously even after Herod ordered all

boy babies 2 years and under killed.

Matthew 2:4-5

4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.

5 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet.

The Church folk had been informed about the birth of Christ  2 years before the wise                           men got to Bethlehem, but never searched for Him

The religious community in Bethlehem searched the scriptures under the command of Herod

concerning the birth of their king, Jesus the Messiah, but saw no need to worship Him.

Think about this. When you fail to believe the Word of God, you delay the blessing God has for you

It was 33 years before the people of Jerusalem knew who Jesus, the Savior was.

33 years without joy. 33 years without the peace of God.  33 years looking for the

savior that was in their midst.

They were looking for God in all the wrong places. They were looking for

God according to their thought of what a savior would look like.

They knew scripture. They only heard scripture according to their understanding

They ignored all the prophecies that stated the Messiah would born to a virgin.

When the prophecy was fulfilled, they message of the fulfillment was.

FAMILY GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

When the wise men left, God sent Mary and Joseph into Egypt. Why?

Matthew 2:13-14

V:13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him."

God prepared the way for us through our past generations. 586 years before the birth of

Christ, the temple, and Jerusalem were destroyed and a large part of the Jewish community

was taken captive.  After 70 years designed by God because of their disobedience many Jews returned.

Many Jews remained in Egypt,

The Jewish Community grew in Egypt and built a temple to the Lord after 167 BC. We must keep in mind that Egyptians were idol god worshipers. God works in the middle of sinful

people.

Isaiah 19:19-20

On that day there will be an altar to the Lord in the heart of Egypt and a monument to the Lord at its border. 20 It will be a sign and witness to the Lord Almighty in the land of Egypt.

RETURNING HOME TO WORK

Mary and Joseph return to Nazareth under God's guidance

Matthew 2:19-20

19 After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt 20 and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child's life are dead."

Luke 2:39-44

they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth. 40 And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.

Mary and Joseph spent 2 years in Bethlehem and 3 years in Egypt before returning to

Their hometown of Nazareth.  It is possible that the gold, frankincense, and myrrh

Was used to support them until they returned.

God protects and supports those that are faithful to Him

REGULAR WORSHIP

V:41 Every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover. 42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to the Feast, according to the custom. 43 After the Feast was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. 44

NIV

Luke 2:46-48

46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.

It is our job as parents to be involved in regular worship services.

From an early age, our children should be involved in serving the Lord.

Our children grow as we grow in the Lord.

We know little about Jesus from the ages of 12 to 30 because God did not

Gives any information. What we do know is that his steps were ordered by

The Lord.  At 30 years old what is emerges was a Priest, Prophet and Kings

And our Lord and savior.

His 3 ½ ministry changed the world. He is now seated at the right Hand of

The Father making intercessions for us.

This Week's Sunday School Lesson, "Treasure In Earthen Vessels", 2 Corinthians 5:1-21, 1/1/2023

 TREASURE IN EARTHEN VESSELS

2 Corinthians 5:1-21

2 Corinthians 4:7

We have this treasure contained in clay vessels. From God and not man

WHAT IS THIS TREASURE?

It is the Gospel of Jesus Christ

It is the Spirit of God. It is The Love of God. It is the Glory of God. It is the

purpose of God. It is the Word Of God. It is a Gift from God.

This treasure is a life with God. This treasure is our salvation. This treasure was gift-wrapped in human flesh for you. This treasure is the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

This treasure is something that must be protected. We have to protect our minds and

hearts from the sins of the world. We have to contain our influence to the Word of truth.

THE VALUE OF THIS TREASURE

2 Corinthians 5:1-5

5 Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.

The Apostle Paul was a tent maker. You could say his day job was making tents, His real job was proclaiming Jesus Christ.

Paul understood that a tent was a temporary shelter. It could be taken down, folded up, and carried away. He knew that in time it would be worn out and need to be replaced.

It is similar to our life on earth. It is a temporary place. We grow up, we grow old, and we get

worn out. This body is the clay vessel. It can get broken and it can be destroyed.

But we have this treasure in this clay vessel. While the clay vessel is temporary, the treasure is eternal. Jesus said that if you abide in Me and my Word abide in you, you ask what you want and it will be given to you. It is a treasure in this earthen vessel that provides protection and provisions. This treasure is valuable.

This treasure orders our steps and guides us into all righteousness,

This treasure is a keepsake. This treasure is worth all the Gold in the world. This treasure is worth our time and our study.

THE PURPOSE OF THIS TREASURE

2 Corinthians 5:5

5 Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

This treasure is our guiding light. It is the light of the world an example for all to see

and live by.

This treasure is the strength of the earthen vessel

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Verse five says this clay vessel was made for this purpose. We were made in the image

and likeness of the Almighty God. While the clay vessel is getting worn out, the treasure is renewed every day.

This earthen vessel was born in sin and shaped in iniquity.  This clay vessel was destined for death. But the treasure was predestined for eternal life.

THIS TREASURE REVIVES OUR FAITH

2 Corinthians 5:6-11

V:6 Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. 7 We live by faith, not by sight. 8 We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 9 So we make it our goal to please him,

We got this treasure in this earthen vessel. This treasure comes with confidence.  I can trust the Lord. With this treasure, I am justified, sanctified, and clothed in the righteousness of God.

With this treasure, I don't have to worry about tomorrow. Because they just live by faith and not by sight.

This treasure in this earthen vessel reminds me that my goal is to please the Lord.

This treasure reminds me of my heavenly home. I look forward to being absent from the body and present with Lord.  This treasure reminds me that I got some work to do. I got cleaning up to do. I got some growing up to do. I got some service to perform. I got to get ready for that judgment day.

Bear with me, I talking about the TREASURE

THIS TREASURE IS THE PRIDE OF LIFE

V:11 Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade men. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience. 12 We are not trying to commend ourselves to you again, but are allowing you to take pride in us so that you can answer those who take pride in what is seen rather than in what is in the heart. 13 If we are out of our mind, it is for the sake of God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For Christ's love compels us because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 15 And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.

The treasure comes with responsibility.

The treasure makes it plain, I must first reverence the Lord.  Second, It is my job to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I can't keep this treasure to myself. I got to share it with everybody else. This treasure makes it plain to me, that while I got the opportunity I must take pride in Jesus Christ, If boast, I boast in the Lord

It is this treasure that keeps me in my right mind. It's this treasure that compels me to love God first and to love you as I love myself.

It is this treasure in this earthen vessel that reminds me of hope of my salvation. Christ died for me and you. We are all raised when He was raised. It is this treasure that reminds me that I am no longer mine, but the Lord.  It is this treasure that reminds me if I live I must live for the Lord.

THIS TREASURE IS OUR NEW CREATION

V:16 So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, and the new has come!

This treasure gives me a new point of view.  This treasure elevates us to a new and higher

level of thinking. This treasure reminds me that this earthen vessel is being broken and reshaped into something new. The old man is dead and a new man has come alive.

I getting old and my steps are getting shorter, but this treasure is renewing me on the inside.

The outlook on the outside may be dim. But our look on the inside is bright and shining.

We got this treasure in earthen vessels.

THIS TREASURE IS OUR REDEMPTION

V:18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.

This treasure is from God. Man has nothing to offer in comparison. Only God can reconcile us to Himself. Only God can take away the sins of the world and replace them with His righteousness.

As bad as I am, as terrible as I have been, God sent His Son to die for my sins and yours.

God has decided that any good that we do is nothing more than filthy rags. Yet, He redeemed

us from our sins and made us responsible for the message of reconciliation.

I got his treasure in this earthen vessel. I am compelled to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.

WE ARE MADE AMBASSADORS FOR THIS TREASURE

2 Corinthians 5:20-21

V:20 We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God. 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

As bad as we are, As terrible as we can be, God has made us Ambassadors for Christ.

God overlooks the bad and sees the good in us. He compels us to be reconciled to

Himself through His Son.

We got this treasure in earthen vessels. It makes us conscious of the righteousness that

has been bestowed upon us.

This treasure is God’s grace and God’s mercy. This treasure is worth the praise of men

all day long.

This treasure was announced to us by God’s Holy Angels

Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth peace, and goodwill toward me.

This treasure come with wisdom that exceeds the knowledge of all men for all times.

This treasure we have brings joy when there is sadness. This treasure we have brings peace when there is turmoil. This treasure that we have brings hope when others see gloom and doom. This treasure that we have causes us to shout when there is no one around us.

This treasure that we have lets us face trials and tribulations with the joy of the Lord.

The joy I have, the world didn’t give it and the world can’t take it away. Because I have

this treasure in this earthen vessel.

THANK GOD FOR THIS TREASURE

Bible Study Series: Mary's Joy And The Joy To The World, Luke 1:46-55

MARY’S JOY AND JOY TO THE WORLD

Luke 1:46-57

MARY GLORIFIES THE LORD

V:46 And Mary said:

"My soul glorifies the Lord

47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

48 for he has been mindful

of the humble state of his servant.

From now on all generations will call me blessed,

Mary had just conceived baby Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit.

She had been informed by the Angel Gabriel that her older cousin Elizabeth

well past the childbearing age was six months pregnant.

Notice, Mary a teenager was full of joy.

She readily accepted her assignment to be the living vessel to bring

the spirit of Jesus in the flesh to the world. At the risk of being stoned to

death by the community because of her pregnancy before marriage, she

considered herself blessed.

God revealed to us that every person has a body, soul, and spirit.

The soul embodies all our emotions and feelings.

From deep inside her emotions she was filled with Joy.

Mary understood how important her assignment was to the community

and the world.

She was grateful to God for selecting her for this awesome assignment,

She glorified God for her heart with her mouth

She humbled herself before the Lord and considered herself a servant.

We ought to be grateful for what God is doing in our lives. It is our

faithfulness that gets God's attention. God blesses those who humble themselves

before Him. We never know what blessings we miss because we are

to proud honor God.

It is surprising to me that a teenager would understand that her actions would

bless the whole world. God blesses those who reverence Him with uncommon

wisdom. When God gives you an assignment He will not leave you ignorant of

what to do.

MARY PRAISES GOD

V:49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me —

holy is his name.

50 His mercy extends to those who fear him,

from generation to generation.

God has done great things for each of us. Every moment we live,

God is doing great things. It is up to us to give God credit for what He does.

God is holy and without sin. Anything he does for us to benefit others along

with us,

When we reverence the Lord, we bless our families and grandchildren.

This shows the importance of living a holy life. Our children are influenced by

the relationship we have with the Lord. If they see their parents praising

and worshipping the Lord. They are more likely to do the same. If

children see their parents trusting the Lord in all their activities, they

are likely to trust the Lord. God has shown mercy on us

because of the prayers of our parents,

MARY CLAIMED THE WORK OF GOD

V:51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;

he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.

52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones

but has lifted the humble.

Again, this teenager shows exceptional wisdom and knowledge

of how God deals with the community, with nations, and with individuals

who praise their accomplishments and neglect His work in their

lives. Anyone neglecting God has an attitude of pride.

Mary shows exceptional maturity by being able to recognize that God

brings down the proud and lifts the humble. It is only a mature person

knows the difference between being humble and being proud.

How does a teenager with limited life experiences, know that God deals with

man according to His commands?

In my mind, it shows the influence of the Godly teaching of parents or guardians.

Whoever she lives with taught her to love and respect God. Jesus, Himself was

growing in wisdom and spirit at the age of 12. You would expect that from God,

but not from a teenager.

It is obvious to me that from birth God has been supernaturally guiding the mental

development of Mary. She was selected for the job of being the mother of Jesus

from her birth.

MARY’S KNOWLEDGE OF HISTORY

V:53 He has filled the hungry with good things

but has sent the rich away empty.

54 He has helped his servant Israel,

remembering to be merciful

55 to Abraham and his descendants forever,

even as he said to our fathers."

Mary had accurate knowledge of Israel’s history.

Consider this there were no written copies of the Old Testament

available to the public. Only the rich would have a copy of

the Old Testament. The only time a poor person would come

into contact with the written Word would be in the Synagogue at the reading

of scripture.  Mary's knowledge  would have come directly from God

or someone connected with teachers of the law or the Synagogue,

Mary's knowledge of Israel's history was broad enough to go back to

the promises God made to Abraham.  The phrase “servant Israel”

is only mentioned in the Old Testament three times; Isaiah 44:1, 49:3

and Psalms 136:22.

Mary, the mother of Jesus was truly an unusual and remarkable teenager.

I am spending this talking about the quality of the person God prepared to be born

His Son in the flesh in the world so that you would know her worth.

When God is involved in our children's lives they are positioned to become

great people.

MARY’S KINDNESS

V:56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.

Mary spent enough time with her Cousin Elizabeth that she knew the pain of child

bearing. Being with Elizabeth and Zachariah she gains more knowledge about God

the Father. I suggest that Mary's faith in God was strengthened through her conversations

with Elizabeth.

As we grow, God surrounds his chosen people with others who guide their knowledge

in His Word.

SUMMARY

Let me summarize the characteristics of Mary, the mother of Jesus

1. She was faithful to God. She accepted her assignment with joy

2. She was a caring person.  She traveled 80 to 100 miles to be with her cousin.

3. She was courageous.  She accepted the charge knowing that she could be stoned

to death being an unwed mother

4. She trusted God.  She left her security to God against robbers on the road

to her cousin's house and the possible scorn of the community

5. She was grateful.  She praises God from the depths of her soul for selecting her.

6. She was unselfish.  She preferred her state over her desire for a traditional wedding

7. She had a helpful spirit. She stayed and comforted Elizabeth during the difficult

    time of her pregnancy.

THANK GOD FOR MARY’S LOVE

Rev. M. Mitchell

This Week's Sunday School Lesson, "The Blessins Of A Savior", Luke 2:1-17, 12/25/2022

THE BLESSING OF A SAVIOR

Luke 2:1-18

GOD SET THE STAGE FOR JESUS BIRTH

V:1. And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

3 And all went to be taxed, everyone into his city.

4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

All things work together for those who love the Lord and are called according to His

purposes.

God loves Israel. God loves us. He shows His love through what He does.

God set Cyrenius in place then Caesar Augustus to tax the Israelite's so

Jesus could be born in a place according to His plan. God was fulfilling

His prophecies.

First, you have the miracle birth of a virgin.   Isaiah 7:14

Second, He would be born in Bethlehem  Micah 5:2

Third, Jesus would be a Nazarene   Matthew 2:22-23

This is from Isaiah 11:1  The Word for the branch is netzer

in the word the letters NZR,   NaZaReth

The taxing by Caesar brought Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem.

It was the taxing requirement that caused Mary and Joseph to make

the 90-mile trip from Nazareth to Bethlehem.

There are over 350 prophesies in the Old Testament concerning the birth of Christ

Where we are today is because God ordered the circumstances so it would be.

Our lives may look as if things happen randomly. God controls the circumstances

good and bad so we are placed according to the timing of His will.

The trouble we face today makes the blessing of our success tomorrow.

THE BIRTH OF THE SAVIOR

V:6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

The world has no room in their hearts for Jesus who makes room for them.

Verse 7 indicates the depraved state of mankind. All of us sometimes in our lives

has closed the door to Jesus who is the source of all our needs.

The King of kings was born in humble circumstances. Not in a hotel or house but

in a stable inside a cave and laid in an animal water or feeding tough  made out of stone,

according to early church fathers, Justian Martyr (150 AD) and Jerome (325 AD)

The birth of Jesus was probably by Joseph because there is no mention of a midwife.

I can imagine Mary directed Joseph in the delivery using her experience gained

in helping her cousin in the birth of John the Baptist

The baby Jesus was not dressed in a tailor-made garment, but wrapped with strips of

cloth.

The travel that Mary and Joseph had to make indicates to me the journey you and I

have to make in life to be with Jesus. Like Mary, we carry Jesus inside of us. In our

minds, hearts and souls are the spirits of Jesus.  The days may be long, and the struggles

many, and our hearts may grow weary at times, but the Jesus in us gives courage.

THE SHEPHERD'S JOY

V:8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

The notification of the birth of Jesus was given first to shepherds in the field

Jesus, Himself is the chief Shepherd of all Christians.

We can learn from the characteristics of a shepherd

     They have a low position

     They work in the field

They are guardians of the flock

     They work in harsh conditions

They are leaders of the flock

They are defenders of the flock

     They tend the flock 24/7.

These are all the characteristics of our Lord and Savior.

Why did God choose the nighttime to reveal the birth of His Son?

Why did God choose shepherds?

Consider being alone at night with a friend and your favorite pet and a

and an Angel appears perhaps in a bright light and began speaking.

You have never seen an angel. How would you respond?

Since shepherds were in the field, would they have any knowledge of the

coming Messiah?  According to the text they responded by faith.

God sends angels as messengers to the low and the Humble.

He did not send the angels to the proud.

He did not send the angels to the educated.

He did not send His angels to the Synagogues.

He sent His angels to the fields where the Good News of Jesus began.

God sent the message to the ones who would listen.

He sent the message to the ones who would rejoice.

God sent His message to the ones who would appreciate it.

God’s Angels appeared to several shepherds at once. The rule was a thing would be

accepted as truth if there were two or more witnesses.

The knowledge of Jesus should give us great joy.

THE SHEPHERDS PRAISE OF GOD

V:12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.

God speaks to us in languages we can understand.

The shepherds understood the directions of the Angel.

They knew where the managers in Bethlehem were located.

They knew to look in the caves in the mountainside.

They knew to look for a newborn baby in a feeding trough.

The Lord gives us the attitude of praise. We ought to praise God in private and in

public. We ought to encourage others to sing praises to God.

Out of our hearts, we ought to glorify God.

We must believe in our hearts that He is the most high God.

Our hope is peace and joy. As a result of His mercy toward us. We ought to pray

for the goodwill of everyone.

THE SHEPHERD’S EDUCATION

V:15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

16 And they came with haste and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

Once we come to knowledge about Jesus., we ought to make haste to know Him for ourselves.

It is the personal knowledge of Jesus that gives peace, joy, and hope,

It is the personal knowledge of Jesus that gives us confidence in Him.

Jesus has to be birthed in our hearts for us to find our true purpose in life

THE SHEPHERD’S MISSION

V:17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

The shepherd gives us our mission in life as children of God. Go broadcast the good news

about Jesus. Broadcast it with faith, confidence, and hope rejoicing all the time.

Matthew 28:19-20

19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

This mission was not given to one person. It was given to all believers to proclaim the

Good News about Jesus to all the world.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY. PEACE ON EARTH AND GOODWILL TO YOU

THANK GOD FOR JESUS

Sermon: "What Is Your Name?" Genesis 32:22-27

 WHAT IS YOUR NAME?

Genesis 32: 22-27

When I was growing up I had some favorite television shows.

Gunsmoke, The rifleman, I love Lucy, and Perry Mason.

My all-time favorite show was Mission Impossible.

It was a series that ran from 1966 to 1973.

It would always start with a taped message to Mr. Phelps

“ Your mission Jim should you decide to accept it ………..describing the mission

Once the mission was described. It would end with this; Should you or any member of your Mission

Impossible force is captured or killed, the secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions".

The tape would immediately self-destruct.

God has a mission for you.

Your Mission is the Gospel of Jesus Christ

If you decide to accept it, you will be successful

God will acknowledge your actions.

The text this morning is about Jacob one of Israel’s patriarchs.

This story of Jacob begins in Chapter 25  of Genesis and runs through chapter 46.

It would take 21 sermons to tell the story of how God worked in Jacobs's life

It is a story filled with drama and turmoil. It is a story of hardships and blessings

If I was a play writer it would be a daytime soap opera.

Its a story of mamma drama, baby mamma drama, brother drama

and uncle drama, that God himself initiated

It would take 21 sermons to tell the story of how God worked in Jacobs's life.

I only got a few minutes, so all I can give you is a preview.

Genesis 32:22-27

22 That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two maidservants, and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 23 After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions. 24 So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob's hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. 26 Then the man said, "Let me go, for it is daybreak."

But Jacob replied, "I will not let you go unless you bless me."

27 The man asked him, "What is your name?"

"Jacob," he answered.

28 Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome."

This text is set in the middle of the drama.  Jacob was returning Home after 20 years.

Its a story of mamma drama and baby mamma drama that God himself initiated

It would take 21 sermons to tell the story of how God worked in Jacobs's life

I only got a few minutes, so all I can give you is a preview.

All of us have a past. God allows us to make our own decisions

and face the consequences and rewards of those decisions.

The consequences good or bad are designed to mature us for the plan God

has for our lives.

All Jacobs's life he was a wrestler.   From His mother's womb, he wrestles with Esau

to see who came out first. Jacob came out of the womb holding on to the heel of Esau.

Jacob was a mamma's boy.   When Issac his father was old, blind, and near death it

was the custom to bestow the blessing of the inheritance to the oldest son.

Jacob and Esau were twins.

Esau was the oldest because he was born first.  He was hairy. Jacob was smooth

-skinned. Jacob and his mamma came up with a scheme to fool Issac that he was Esau.

Jacob put animal hair around his arms,  lying to his father that he was Esau

thus stealing Esau’s inheritance.

He ran from his brother Esau after deceiving him of his inheritance.

Following his father's instructions, Jacob was sent to his uncle's house and take a wife.

It was 500 miles to his uncle Laban's home.

According to Biblical historians, Jacob was 71 years old when he

left home

ON HIS WAY RUNNING AWAY  FROM GOD,  JACOB MET GOD

GOD IS IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR TROUBLES

Genesis 28:12-15   (Jacob’s Ladder)

He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching into heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.

God confirmed the promises of a nation made to Abraham and promised to bless Jacob.

Jacob made a vow to give God a tenth of what He blessed him with.

Jacob set up a pillar and called it God's house, and made a vow to give

a tenth. Of what he earned to God

LIFE EXPERIENCES GROW YOU TO THE MISSION

Jacob continued to his uncle’s house who was a master deceiver

He met the woman he wanted to marry. His uncle’s daughter, Rachel.  He agreed to work for His uncle for 7 years for Rachel.

After 7 years Jacob was prepared to get in bed with his wife.

On his wedding night, his uncle sent his older daughter Leah into the wedding tent.

When morning came he realized his uncle had tricked him. So agreed to another

7 years to get Rachel.   The mamma drama began.

Jacob had two wives and two maidservants.  Jacob had children with four women

because of the rivalry between Rachel and Leah.

WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND

YOUR MISSION WILL INCLUDE SOME GROW-UP TIME

His uncles change his wages several times. Following God’s instructions, Jacob got

wise and figured out a scheme to get what was owed him. Genesis 31:1-13

GOD, PLANS TO BLESS YOU IN YOUR HARDSHIPS

Genesis 30:37-41

37 Jacob, took fresh-cut branches from poplar, almond, and plane trees and made white stripes on them by peeling the bark and exposing the white inner wood of the branches. 38 Then he placed the peeled branches in all the watering troughs, so when flock came to drink. they mated in front of the branches. And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted. 40 Jacob set apart the young of the flock by themselves but made the rest face the streaked and dark-colored animals that belonged to Laban. Thus he made separate flocks for himself and did not put them with Laban's animals.

As a result after six years Jacob the deceiver became rich with livestock.

GOD DIRECTS YOUR PATH TO THE MISSION

It was 20 years later with 2 wives 2 maidens and 11 sons and one daughter

that God instructed Jacob to leave his uncle and head back home.

On His way back home Jacob meets God in a dream again

Still, got your Bibles Open?

Genesis 32:24-29

24 So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob's hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. 26 Then the man said, "Let me go, for it is daybreak."

But Jacob replied, "I will not let you go unless you bless me."

27 The man asked him, "What is your name?"

"Jacob," he answered.

28 Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome."

29 Jacob said, "Please tell me your name."

But he replied, "Why do you ask my name?" Then he blessed him there.

YOU NEED TO GO TO GOD IN PRAYER

You need to wrestle with God in Prayer

Jacob was experienced in wrestling. He has been a wrestler all His life

He wrestles to get out of the womb

He wrestles with his conscience because he loved his mother and father,

but took the advice of the mother to deceive the father

He wrestled with his conscience because lied to his father.

He wrestles with his conscience because he stole his brother's blessings

He wrestled with His uncle because his uncle deceived and used him for 20 years

He wrestles with wives'; baby mamma drama about the number of children.

There comes a time when you need to quit wrestling and let God take charge of

your life

THE STEPS TO A SUCCESSFUL MISSION

1. PRAY WITHOUT CEASING

When God sees your persistence, He will answer your prayer.

Don’t give up on prayer.

The text says when he was alone, he had a dream.  You can have some serious prayers

when you are alone with God. It had been 20 years since he had some alone time

with God

Because he was a wrestler, God sent an angel to wrestle with him

The angel wrestled with him all night till daybreak but couldn’t prevail.

2. PRAYER TIME IS YOUR BEST TIME

Look Jacob had two wives, two maidservants,

11 sons and one daughter and a boatload of livestock to take care of.

He had baby mamma drama from the time he married his first wife.

In addition, he heard that his brother Esau was coming toward him

with an army of 400 men.

Jacob needed some prayer time with God.

When you are overwhelmed with problems and issues, the best place to be

is in prayer with God.

Jacob wrestled so hard that angel dislocated  the socket in his hip so

had a limp in his step.

There are times when I had dreams that I can't remember them.

You need something to remind you of your time with God. The limp was a reminder

to Jacob of his struggle with God. It was a reminder of his need to surrender his

life to God.

You and I have been struggling all our lives. We have been trying to handle things by ourselves.

We need to come to a point in our lives where we turn the struggle over to God.

Jacob was struggling with family, struggling on the job, and struggling with

a conscience. It's just too much,  You got to turn the struggle over to God.

3. DON’T GIVE UP ON GOD

20 years earlier, before he met his uncle, God promised Jacob that he

would take care of him. Jacob vowed to give a tenth of his earnings to the Lord.

God

His promises even if we don’t keep ours.

Jacob was 91 years old when the Lord sent him back home. In 91 years

Jacob had not surrendered to the Lord.

The Angel said it's daybreak, I got to go. But Jacob said not until you bless me.

Notice it was not until Jacob surrendered to God that he got the blessings

of the MISSION.

To be blessed you got to look at yourself in the mirror. Who are you?

4. EXPECT A NAME CHANGE

The name Jacob means deceiver, holding on to the heal

The Name Israel means a contender with God.

The angel asked, WHAT IS YOUR NAME?

It had been 20 years since that question was asked.  It was Issac, Jacob’s

father who asked the question. Jacob lied and said, Esau.

My name is Jacob. I am a  deceiver.  I am a liar. I am a thief. I

dishonored my mother and father. I am all about me. I didn’t

keep my vow to God to give a tenth back to Him.

You got to confess your sins to be blessed.  Even though you have been selected

for the mission, you won't be blessed in the mission until you confess your sins

and surrender your life to God.

When you surrender to God  He will change your name

Any man in Christ is a new creation, The old man is dead and a new man

has come alive

The old man of sin is dead. The old man who struggled within himself is

dead. The old man who thought he had to do it all by himself is dead.

The old man who couldn’t let go and let God is dead

The new man in Christ has come alive. The new man has surrendered to God.

The new man has turned all his struggles over to God, The new man in Christ

has decided to be obedient to God. The new man in Christ will allow Him

to order his steps.  The new man has decided to trust God and wait on Him.

The sins of the old man have been covered by the blood of Jesus making him

a new man.

The new man will worship the Lord in spirit and truth.

I got to say this so no one gets offended.    There was some good in Jacob. He was

blessed throughout his 91 years to become Israel.

We all have the same issues that Jacob had. It is only because we are Jacob,

God’s building blocks, that we can become Israel contenders with God,

The prince of Israel.

5. RETURN AND SURRENDER TO GOD

You Got to surrender to the guidance of the Holy Spirit to change your

name to Israel.

Notice, it was when Jacob returned Home that his name was changed.

Home is not a place on earth. Home does not have an address in this world.

Home is where your heart is. Home is with Jesus Christ.

You don't have to die physically to be at home with Jesus. You need to accept

Jesus, now as your savior and be at home.

Jesus said where I am,  you will be also. Home is with the Lord.

You can’t be effective in  your Mission until you return Home

6. YOUR LIFE EXPERIENCES HAVE PREPARED YOU

    FOR THE MISSION

God blessed Jacob with a 12th son After he left Laban, Benjamin

It was the start of the nation of Israel.

God confirmed His design for a nation to Moses  100 years later,

Exodus 24:4

He got up early the next morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain and set up twelve stone pillars representing the twelve tribes of Israel.

The 12 sons of Jacob, 400 years later became the 12 tribes of Israel

The 11 sons of Jacob were the kickoff point for Jacobs's Mission

God revealed to Joseph, Jacob's 11th son the next part of His redemption plan.

20 years of  labor was part of God’s plan to prepare Jacob for

the Mission.

Jacobs's Mission was to set the foundation for the division of the promised Land

of Israel. The promised first to Abraham.

His mission set the foundation for the nation of Israel to bless the world

With our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Greater Macedonia, God is getting ready to do a new thing with this church.

GMBC is getting ready to celebrate 100 years of existence. We just celebrated our

Pastor first Ladies' 11th anniversary.  This is the kickoff point for 2023

God is going to the next 100 years.

It is going to be greater than the first 100 years.
