Bible Study Series: Living In Confidence With Jesus, 2 KIngs 7:3-12

LIVING IN CONFIDENCE WITH JESUS

2 Kings 7:3-12

The city of Samaria was under siege by the Arameans. They cut off the food supply so there

was little to eat in the city.  The price of anything left in the city was extremely high. Some People killed and ate their own Children.  There was a problem between Elisha the prophet and the King.

The king blamed the problems of the city on Elisha and his God.

Elisha told the King’s messenger that God would put an end to the troubles.

2 Kings 7:1-3

THE LORD’S PLAN

V:7.1 Elisha said, "Hear the word of the Lord. This is what the Lord says: About this time tomorrow, a seah of flour will sell for a shekel and two seahs of barley for a shekel at the gate of Samaria."

2 The officer on whose arm the king was leaning said to the man of God, "Look, even if the Lord should open the floodgates of the heavens, could this happen?"

"You will see it with your own eyes," answered Elisha, "but you will not eat any of it!"

POSITIONED TO BE BLESSED

V:3 Now there were four men with leprosy at the entrance of the city gate. They said to each other, "Why to stay here until we die? 4 If we say, 'We'll go into the city'-the famine is there, and we will die. And if we stay here, we will die. So let's go over to the camp of the Arameans and surrender. If they spare us, we live; if they kill us, then we die."

Leprosy in the Bible is described as white sores all over the body.

Numbers 5:1-4

The Lord said to Moses, 2 "Command the Israelites to send away from the camp anyone who has an infectious skin disease or a discharge of any kind, or who is ceremonially unclean because of a dead body. 3 Send away male and female alike; send them outside the camp so they will not defile their camp, where I dwell among them." 4 The Israelites did this; they sent them outside the camp.

According to the World Health Organization

Text Box: 1.	Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by a type of bacteria, Mycobacterium leprae.
1.	The disease predominantly affects the skin and peripheral nerves. Left untreated, the disease may cause progressive and permanent disabilities.
1.	The bacteria are transmitted via droplets from the nose and mouth during close and frequent contact with untreated cases.
1.	Leprosy is curable with multidrug therapy (MDT).

The four leprous men were between a rock and a hard place. According to Jewish law, they were

locked outside the city walls. Some distance from them was the Armenian army ready to attack the

city.

No way to get food, they were starving to death. In the city, there was no food. In the Armenian camp

was plenty of food.

In a way, we are all like the leprous men, full of sores before the Lord. We are considered filthy

rags

Isaiah 64:6

All of us have become like one who is unclean,

and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags;

We got Jesus in our lives. We are saved, sanctified, and justified. The Blood of Jesus has

washed us clean.  The problem is, in some ways, we are still living like we have sore all over

our bodies.   We are still living outside the camp of blessings, peace, and joy. Every time a new

problem arises in our lives we start to worry, a white sore. We make decisions without going in

prayer, a white sore. We leave home without prayer, a white sore. We pride ourselves in our

work, a white sore. We trust in self first, before we call on the Lord, a white sore.

LORD HELP MY UNBELIEF

We are at the entry of the gates of heaven. Jesus gave us the keys to enter. It is our unbelief that

stops us from entering. It's our infectious unbelief that is the disease behind the sores.

Unbelief leads to disobedience and disobedience to sin.

Unbelief robs us of the freshness each day. Unbelief robs us of the possibilities God guarantees.

Unbelief keeps us from pursuing the help we need from the only one who gives it to us.

Whatever situation you are in, others are in the same. You are not alone. Four is a divine number.

The Israelites were in slavery for 400 years. The Israelites wandered in the desert for 40 years.

There were 3 milestones in Moses' life. He left Egypt at 40 years of age. He spent 40 years in

Midian as a shepherd. He spent 40 years in the desert with the Israelites. In God’s Word you

Will find similarities to every situation in your life.

If you want to change your life, you have to make a decision.

God uses your misery to set you up for a future blessing.

God got blessings waiting for your discovery.

The 4 leprous men had no idea that God had prepared their recovery through the prophet

Elisha.  They had no idea that they were part of a bigger plan.

They had no idea that God had a plan to save the city. Their leprosy was part of the plan,

and they would be the first to be blessed.

They were last to be considered, but first to receive the relief of God.

2 Kings 7:1-3

7 Elisha said, "Hear the word of the Lord.

LOOK FOR THE GOOD IN YOUR SITUATION

Never think you are useless, worthless, and not under the eyesight of God. Whatever circumstance

you are in God allows for a bigger purpose. You are suffering. But your suffering may be the blessing that includes you and others. Cancer is a leading cause of death in the US. But it is driving research that one day may be the end of all cancers.

The four leprous men were unlikely candidates to bring good news. They were outside

the city gates. They were outcasts, poor, hungry, and unclean. They were in a hopeless

situation.

In City was death. If they stayed where they were it was death. In the Armenian camp was

all the food they needed and a chance for life. The only door open to them was the camp

of the enemy. In the doom and gloom of their situation, the only ray of hope was in what they

feared, the camp of the enemy.

God has opened the door to the kingdom of heaven. All we have to do is enter.

How many churches did we pass by before we entered? Outside the church is death

Inside the Church is life. We have to make a choice to live. In the Lord, your situation

is never hopeless. In the Lord is His solution to your situation.

STEP OUT ON FAITH

V:5 At dusk they got up and went to the camp of the Arameans. When they reached the edge of the camp, not a man was there, 6 for the Lord had caused the Arameans to hear the sound of chariots and horses and a great army, so that they said to one another, "Look, the king of Israel has hired the Hittite and Egyptian kings to attack us!" 7 So they got up and fled in the dusk and abandoned their tents and their horses and donkeys. They left the camp as it was and ran for their lives.

God is waiting on you to decide to trust Him. He has all you need in abundance.

God can make your enemy your blessing. The moment you decide to trust God

the blessings are ready.

God terrified a well-trained, well-equipped army, and fearless army. He confused

all men of the army with the sound of a mighty army rushing toward them. They fled without

a fight. They made up their minds that the armies of two nations had been hired to kill

them. They had no proof, just the sound they heard. God can confuse your enemy into

blessing you.

By making a decision, to trust the insight that God gave them, the four leprous men were blessed by the enemy. God is waiting on you to trust Him with your situation.

ENTER INTO HIS PRESENCE WITH THANKSGIVING

V:8 The men who had leprosy reached the edge of the camp and entered one of the tents. They ate and drank, carried away silver, gold, and clothes, and went off and hid them. They returned and entered another tent and took some things from it and hid them also.

When they Got to the camp no enemy was there. They were comforted by Jesus. Their fear was

gone. The food they needed was supplied. The clothes they needed were supplied. Empty pockets

were filled with goal and silver.

They just wanted a bite to eat. They found more than they could hope for in abundance. There was food, clothing, and money. All they needed was to accept the salvation of the Lord. They

were still uncleaned. The blood of Jesus, the most precious gift would wash them clean.

Their first response was to rejoice in their good fortune. They took all they wanted and hide

the treasure. Jesus is a treasure you can't count. In Jesus, there is peace, joy, and refreshment.

O what peace they enjoyed because they trusted the instinct the Lord gave them. It

was the Lord who made them feel the misery of their sin and drew them to His abundance.

God is working in your misery.

Our misery is a call to action. It does not take much to stay where you are. Just do nothing

and die in your misery. It takes courage to do something different. It takes courage to seek that

ray of light that is before you and readily available. It takes courage to see your troubles

working for your good. It takes courage to say to the Lord. Thank you for my trouble.

SHARE THE GOOD NEWS

V:9 Then they said to each other, "We're not doing right. This is a day of good news and we are keeping it to ourselves. If we wait until daylight, punishment will overtake us. Let's go at once and report this to the royal palace."

God works in your joy and will not settle for selfishness. God will force you to consider the plight

of others around you. When there was food in the city, they survived from the generosity of

the food provided over the wall and perhaps by those who passed by them on their way in or out of

the city.

Relieved from their misery, they could focus on the needs of the city. They understood what

it meant to be hungry. They understood what it meant to be cut off from family and friends.

They understood what it meant to be in a hopeless situation. When they experienced the

blessings of God, They immediately became guilty of not sharing the Good News.

It is the mercy of God to impress us with His righteousness. It is the grace of God to

heighten our awareness of the plight of others and not let us rest until we share the good news.

They recognized the good news and knew they had to share it with families inside the city.

There is no mention of the leprous men being connected to God. But their actions shows

that there was good in their hearts. Their Words indicated a dedication to doing what is right.

GO MAKE DISCIPLES FOR JESUS

V:10 So they went and called out to the city gatekeepers and told them, "We went into the Aramean camp, and not a man was there — not a sound of anyone — only tethered horses and donkeys, and the tents left just as they were." 11 The gatekeepers shouted the news, and it was reported within the palace.

Matthew 26:36-50

WALKING WITH JESUS

V:36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray."  37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me."

In times of trouble, Jesus teaches us how to pray.

First, He goes to a place of solitude. He retires from the distractions of the world.

In this case, He takes His enter circle, Peter, James, and John. These three He had taken to

mount of Transfiguration.  Why these three? Peter and John would be the first leaders of

the Church. James would be the first Apostle to be martyred by Herod.

Jesus instructed them to stay and watch for Him. Not that He needed

they, but Jesus shows us the importance of corporate prayer in matters that concern the

church.

He explains the agony and sorrow that his soul experienced. Deep in His soul was the pain of

death.   Jesus was in view of His death at the hands of the ones He came to save.

He was free of sin, never touch sin or entertained sin. He would become sin for the billions

of people in the world, past, present, and future. This had never been done before and will

never be done again.

What was His agony?  Was it the burden of sin or the Father who allowed Him to become the sin

sacrifice for all time? He knew He would survive the ordeal because of the third-day resurrection.

Because Jesus knew all things, He knew the extreme agony His soul would experience. You and I

are used to sin. We were born in sin. His agony is beyond our comprehension.

NOT MY WILL BUT THE FATHER WILL

V:39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."

Jesus shows us the right poster of humbleness before the Father. Face down on the ground. We are

nothing, He is everything. Often time our prayer is for our will not the Father’s will. We never know

how much enduring our trouble will encourage someone else. If we focus on the will of the

Father, our prayers will be less about us and more about Him. Prayers that are focused on Jesus

are pleasing to the Father. Prayers focused on the will of the Father will be answered because

they give Him glory.

WATCH AND PRAY

V:40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter. 41 "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."

In times past the angels were there to strengthen Him. In this final hour, Jesus brought His

enter circle to watch and pray with Him. This show how little emphasis we place on the prayers

of others. We want to pray, but the flesh distracts us. We yield to our own desires, neglecting our

prayer responsibility. In times of trouble, we need to know the importance of fervent prayer.

Notice it is a constant prayer that is a tool to fight temptation. We feed the spirit with a prayer to the

Father. When others are praying we need to be actively engaged so we hear their needs of them which

ultimately affect us. If two or more are gathered in the name of the Lord, He is present. What

better way to begin church service than in prayer?

PRAY WITHOUT CEASING

V:42 He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done."

The Father heard Jesus' prayer the first time. Jesus teaches us to be constant in our prayers.

The Father enjoys our conversation with Him. When we go away, we face other things

that come our way. Jesus found His enter circle sleep. Maybe in addition to His prayer,

He prayed for the strength of His disciples. The cup was filled with the bitterness of sin and

corruption. Jesus knew His purpose for the hour had come. He came to fill the promise

of salvation. There would be no salvation unless He drank from the cup. His time on earth

would be useless unless He did what He came to do.

When we face difficult situations, constant prayer is necessary to hear the voice of the Father.

Constant prayer forces us to tune ourselves to God’s guidance and directions. We must remember

we are never alone in prayer, because the Holy Spirit comes alongside us to comfort and

enlighten us.

JESUS IS FOCUSED ON OUR GOOD

V:43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

Three is a divine number. One prayer for the Father, one prayer for the Holy Spirit, and one prayer

for the Son. We miss the opportunity to communicate with Father when we sleep. Notice in our

sleep, the Father is with us and understands our weaknesses. Even in our sleep, Jesus intercedes

for us. He never sleeps or slumbers. His mind is always focused on our best interest

RISE UP AND FOLLOW GOD’S DIRECTIONS

V:45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us go! Here comes my betrayer!"

Satan is always on the warpath. He influences those close to you to betray you. If we rest, we must

pray first for the Lord to keep us as we sleep. Satan is always walking around to see who he may

devour. Our defense is the Word of God. Satan can only do what Jesus allows. The actions

of Satan are no surprise to Jesus. Jesus put himself in a position to be betrayed. Jesus did not

run from the cup, He ran to the cup. Strengthen by His prayer with the Father, He was ready to do

battle with Satan on a spiritual level.  The body may be bruised, but the spirit will survive.

You and I must rise up for the spiritual battle with Satan. We will come face to face with the

enemy. There is no fear for those who trust the Lord, for the battle is already won. Each day

put on the full armor of God so you will be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.

The battle is won one trial at a time.

FACE THE ENEMY WITH THE COURAGE OF THE LORD.

V:47 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him." 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed him.

Your betrayers will come with greeting smiles and kisses. You will know them by the company

they keep. The betrayer may come with an entourage of men powerless to do only what God allows.

Their deception will be evident because they will do what they have never done before.

We do not have any indication that Judas ever kissed Jesus before. We have no indication that Judas

ever had the audience of the Chief Priest and the elders while he walked with Jesus.

Judas was always in the background stealing money from the money bag. In this case Judas

was leading a pack of thieves.

Always be suspicious of a person who has a sudden change of attitude toward you.

Be suspicious of a person who who has a sudden change of friends. A tiger never changes

his stripes. One addicted to certain vices, does not change suddenly.

It was the kiss that sealed Judas' faith in destruction. It was the kiss that started the trail

of salvation opening the door to eternal life for believers.

The will of the Father is played out in your life on a daily bases. Rise up daily ready to

follow the path God has prepared for you. Each day will bring trials and tribulations

God allows for your good and the good of all believers.

DETERMINED TO DO HIS WILL

V:50 Jesus replied, "Friend, do what you came for."

God uses the evilness of man to perform His will. The Greek word for friend used here is

“hetarie” which means companion.  Judas was certainly no friend of Jesus, but a friend of

the men who came to kill Him. Judas walked with Jesus under the influence of the devil

which was his destruction.

Notice, Jesus did not resist the enemy. The enemy of Jesus was carrying out the will of

the Father. He was resolved to allow the plan of the Father to be completed in his life.                                     His betrayal, trial, and death fulfilled the will of the Father. The will of the Father is

the resurrection of Jesus and our resurrection into eternal life.

The lesson to all believers is we are all in God’s divine plan which will result in our

eternal life.

This Week's Sunday School Lesson, "Divine Authority", John 5:19-29, 3/19/2023

 DIVINE AUTHORITY

John 5:19-30

GIVE THE FATHER THE CREDIT

V:19 Jesus gave them this answer: "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.

What you and I need the most is the truth. We don’t need to know what someone

said. We don't need to know people's opinions. We don't need to know the current

trends. What’s needed is the truth. You cannot always rely on what people say or what they

think or have heard, it may be wrong.  You have to know the truth for yourself.

The truth about everything comes from the Lord. The Word of God never changes.

Jesus healed a man who had been lame for 38 years on the Sabbath. The Jews who

heard about the healing and saw the proof of His power questioned Jesus and want to

have Him killed. Not only did Jesus heal, but He called God His Father. The leading

Jews could not Jesus because He claimed a higher authority.

The leading Jews studied the Law (the first 5 books of the Bible), and could recite it, but did not know the spiritual truths of the Law. They relied on their traditions.

Mark 7:9-10

And he said to them: "You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God to observe your own traditions!

Many Christians study the Word of God but change the truth to fit their standards when

applying it to their actions. We have to be careful that we don’t judge others according

to our revised righteous standards.

The Jews complained about one of their own being healed, who healed him and

the day he was healed. Instead of praising God, they judged Jesus based on their

traditions. Instead of seeing the good news, they focused on finding fault.  When

people want to minimize you, they find fault.

Jesus' objective was to do the will of His Father. Even though He and His Father

are one, He humbled Himself and claimed all His actions and power came from

the Father. Jesus followed the Father’s example.

Make your objective the will of the Father.

Acts 17:28

'For in him we live and move and have our being.'

There is nothing you and I have accomplished on our own. We have the help of

God whether we recognize it or not. We must learn to give God credit for what’s

happening in our lives. Every good originates in the Lord.

THE FATHER IS OUR DIRECTOR

V: 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so, the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it.

God is love. The Father’s first love is His Son. His second love is mankind. He loves

us so much that He planned to sacrifice the Son for fallen mankind. For the Son to do

the things of the Father, He has the same character and power as the Father. From the

beginning, the Father and the Son created life from nothing (John 1). It would certainly

be no problem for the Son to raised from the dead His creation.

Before the first coming of Jesus, The Father raised the widow's son through Elijah           (1 Kings 17:22) and the Shunamite son through Elisha ( 2 Kings 4:32)

Jesus though his own will, raised the ruler's daughter (Mark 5:35) and Lazarus

(John 11:44). some of the greater things that Jesus does is the forgiveness of sin,

the giving of salvation to all believers, and the creation of a new heaven and earth.

It pleases Jesus to bring salvation to His chosen.

Our objective should be to please Jesus by patterning ourselves after Him.

One writer wrote, “The Father shows, the Son sees, The Father purpose, the

Son executes”.

Throughout the Bible are God’s examples for us to follow.

JESUS, THE GREAT JUDGE, HONOR HIM

V:22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.

Jesus the great judge came down out of Heaven to dwell among us, to experience from

a human perspective our frailties, experience the results of our sins. our fears,

worries, and unbelief. Since Jesus knows us from a fleshly perspective, He is best to judge us. His grace and His mercy cover us.

From a human perspective. Jesus experienced honor and dishonor from His people             He came to serve. As the supreme example, He honored His earthly mother and father with love and obedience. He experienced love from His disciples and hate from many who followed Him.

Those who knew Him as a teacher loved the Father. Those who rejected Him as a teacher rejected the Father. The concept of Jesus being the Son of God and Messiah was new to Jewish belief. His followers accepted it. Eleven of the twelve disciples He selected were looking for the Messiah when it was revealed to them. One hated Him.

A lesson to each of us is this, we cannot love the Son without loving the Father. We cannot love the Father without loving the Son. The two are one and work in unison to build the body of Christ.  Many religions claim the Father, but deny the existence of a Son. Many of us accept the Son without honoring the commands of the Father.

THE FOUNDATION OF OUR FAITH

V:24 "I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. 25 I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.

Notice it is belief in the Father and the Son, not one or the other.

John chapter 1 explains the first part of this truth. In the beginning, was the Word,

and the Word was God, and the Word was with God and become flesh and dwell

among us. It was God the Father who sent God the Son to be with us.

Since we cannot separate God the Father from God the Son, you cannot separate

the love of the Father from the love of the Son. Those who believe in Jesus have

died to themselves and been resurrected in the newness of eternal life.  We were once dead

in our sins, but now are alive in Jesus. To hear the Word means to believe

in Jesus.  It is the belief in the Son that brings life to the lost. We honor the Father

by loving the Son who was sent for us.

Christ can judge between the living and the dead because He knows the

hearts of every individual. Life in Jesus was granted by the Father. Jesus grants

all believers eternal life.

THE JUDGMENT AT THE RESURRECTION

V:28 "Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out — those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned. 30 By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.

Jesus presents the truth while humbling Himself before the Father for all mankind to

see. Other writers of the Gospel confirm Jesus' second coming.

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, The Apostle Paul

16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Revelation 20:12, Saint John

Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.

Revelation 20:15

If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

The final work concerning man will be done in unison between the Father and the Son

IN CONCLUSION, THE LOVE OF GOD IS THE LOVE OF THE SON WHO

LOVES US TO ETERNAL LIFE.

Bible Study Series: Getting Ready For The Cross, Luke 9:28-36

 GETTING READY FOR THE CROSS

Luke 9:28-36

Eight days Before going to the mountain to pray, Christ had set the stage for the transfiguration.

Jesus asked Peter who do you say I am? He replied, Christ, the Son of God.

Jesus told the twelve disciples that He would be taken to Jerusalem, rejected by the elders, the chief priest, and the teachers of the law. He would be killed and raised on the

third day. He warned the disciple not to tell anyone.

You would think the knowledge of Jesus' pending death and resurrection would be fresh in the minds of the disciples. But they soon forgot His words. Jesus words did not fit

Their perception of their Messiah.

Even though the Word does not fit our understanding, we must accept it.

SET ASIDE ALONE TIME WITH GOD

V:28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John, and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray.

When we go into prayer, we have the Lord as our advocate

We have the angles as our comforters.

We have the Holy Spirit as our helper in prayer.

Your private prayer takes you out of this world into heavenly places.

Ephesians 1:3-4

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

Prayer is the time to bring our petitions and supplication to the Lord. But it is also the time to allow the Lord to refresh our minds about the spiritual blessing He has for us. We can be comforted in our daily problems by remembering the promises Jesus has made to us. Prayer is a time to listen to the Lord's guidance. Prayer is a time of

Praise and worship. Prayer is a time of thanksgiving.

The Lord took only three of the twelve disciples up to the mountain to pray.

He took Peter who was quick with a word. Peter would become the leader

   In the new Church

He took James the first disciple to be martyred.

He took John the one He loved and the last to die.

He wrote the Gospel of John, 1 John, 2 John, and 3 John

When we pray, we ought to lift ourselves out of the worldly environment to a place of

solitude. When we connect with Jesus in prayer we are in the heavenly realm.

We never know how God will use our prayers.

THE POWER TO CHANGE IS IN PRAYER

V:29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning.

Prayer changes things. The first change ought to be in us. There was a change in His face. It became radiant.

When we get out of self and get into the Lord, there is going to be a change.

Prayer ought to have a purpose. Jesus took Peter, James, and John to the mountain for

them a glimpse of heavenly beings. They became His witnesses to the Father's work.

Jesus’s clothes changed to being bright as a flash of lighting. God will clean up, not just

on the outside but the inside.

Hebrews 10:22

22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.

The purpose of prayer is to develop a close relationship with the Father.

IN TIMES OF TROUBLE, THE LORD IS OUR            COMFORT

V:30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, 31 appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem.

Jesus had three witnesses from heaven. Moses, Elijah, and the Father

Moses and Elijah represent two ways we enter heaven.

Moses died and then was taken into heaven.

Elijah was transfigured into heaven alive.

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.

Whatever we are going through in life, God has a word of comfort. Jesus at the start of His ministry was comforted by angels in the desert. Throughout His ministry, Jesus would go off and pray alone.

It was the Father who sent the two glorified saints to discuss with Jesus His death, resurrection, and accession back into heaven. Perhaps they strengthen His resolve to endure the cross according to the will of the Father.

If Jesus took time to be comforted by the Lord, we ought to be of the same mind

IN PRAYER, KEEP YOUR MIND ENGAGED

V:32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.

The Lord was praying, but Peter, James, and John were not participating in the prayer.

After a long day, sleep can become easy

You would think the knowledge of Jesus' pending death and resurrection would be fresh in the minds of the disciples. But they soon forgot His words. Jesus words did not fit

Their perception of their Messiah.

Even though the Word does not fit our understanding, we must accept it.

They woke up in the middle of the conversation.

It may have been the bright light that awakened them. They witness the glory of Christ and the two men with Him. This was a new revelation to them.

According to the discussion 8 days earlier, the Jews had reported to Herod the possible resurrection of John the Baptist, Elijah, or one of the prophets. This may have played into their acceptance of resurrected saints. Sometimes it's easy to mix superstition with facts.

When others are praying, we all need to be involved. There is power in cooperate prayer.

Anything is possible if two can touch and agree.

IT’S GOOD TO BE WITH JESUS

V:33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, "Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters — one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." (He did not know what he was saying.)

As usual, Peter was quick with a suggestion. When he was wrong, he was all the way wrong. Why would glorified saints with a home in heaven need temporary shelter on earth?

When Peter was right, He was all the way right. He had a connection with the

Holy Spirit.

Certainly, it was good for the disciples to witness Christ in His glory with the saints.

In Christ is all knowledge. No one told Peter the glorified saints were Moses and Elijah.

Knowledge of scripture is uncommon knowledge. 8 days earlier, Peter got

insight from the Holy Spirit of who Jesus was.

THE WORD CONFIRMS ITSELF

V:34 While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 A voice came from the cloud, saying, "This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him."

The cloud represented the presence of God. It was God in a cloud that protected Israel as they traveled through the desert to the promised land. When things are confusing, meditation on the Word brings clarity. According to Matthew 17 when the disciple heard the Father speak, they fell down on their faces and were terrified.

The three disciples in the cloud heard the conforming, comforting word of God.

This is the Word we all need.  Three things to pay attention to:

1)This is My Son.  Jesus is the Son of God.

2)I have chosen Him.  The Father chose Jesus to bear the cross for our sins

3) Listen to Him. The Word is truth. The Word is profitable. The Word provides

guidance and directions. The Word provides peace and joy. The Word is Spirit

    inspired.

The Word of God is all you need to know about everything.

The purpose of prayer is to develop a close relationship with the Father.

When others are praying, we all need to be involved. There is power in cooperate prayer.

Anything is possible if two can touch and agree.

THE WORD OF GOD IS COMPLETE

V:36 When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and told no one at that time what they had seen.

All the disciples needed to know about Jesus was complete in their minds. They had a vision and information that would never leave them. They had the comfort and insight they would need for the mission of the Gospel. It was truly Good for them to be there because they had the prelude to the Good News Of Jesus Christ.

Why would they keep it to themselves?   First, they didn't fully understand what they

had witnessed. Second, they were commanded not to tell anyone until He was raised from the dead.

The Word of God is complete. You cannot add anything to it or take any words

From it.

Revelation 22:18-19

If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. 19 And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.

Let us get ready for the second coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
