This Week's Sunday School Lesson, "When God Builds Your House", 2 Samuel 7:1-16, 3/15/2020l

WHEN GOD BUILDS YOUR HOUSE

2 Sam 7:1-16

GOD GIVES US REST AND REFLECTION TIME
V:1.  After the king was settled in his palace and the Lord  had given him rest from all his enemies around him, 2 he said to Nathan the prophet, "Here I am, living in a palace of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent."
3 Nathan replied to the king, "Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the Lord is with you."
A. Several questions come to mind.

     1. Since King Davis had an awesome relationship with God and himself
a champion of prayer, praise and worship, why did he need to counsel
         with anyone about God?
    2. Why didn’t King David go to God and tell Him what He wanted to do
         to honor Him?
    3. Why did Nathan, a prophet of God give an answer before talking to
        God?
    4. Why did both men think so little of God, that they didn’t think that
the changing of the divine worship plan would not require His
         approval?
B. David had been given time to rest, so he reflected on the goodness of his
     Lord.
   1. He considered his cedar palace as being more lavish than God’s tent.
   2. He may have felt that he had neglected the God who meant so much
to him by not building a permanent house of worship.

   3. He may have thought that God deserved more from him.
C. David looked at the tent and did not see the divine significance of it.

    1. David looked at the tent and did not see the worship significance of it.

    2. David looked at the tent and did not see the historical significance of
        it.

    3. Perhaps David did not see the signs of God's design of the tent.

        a. Maybe David couldn’t see the divine design dimensions and
            equipping of the tent.
        b. Perhaps David did not consider the divine durability of the 400 year
            old tent.
        c. Maybe David didn’t understand that worship had nothing to do with
the physical facility but more to do with the spiritual facility of the
hearts of the people of God.
      4. Maybe David just wanted to do something good for his God.
      5. We should always be thoughtful of how we can please God
           and glorify His name.

GOD KNOWS OUR THOUGHTS
V:4. That night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying:
5 "Go and tell my servant David, 'This is what the Lord says: Are you the one to build me a house to dwell in? 6 I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day. I have been moving from place to place with a tent as my dwelling. 7 Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, "Why have you not built me a house of cedar?"
A. Sometimes God corrects our thinking before action is taken.
    1. Perhaps to please King David, Nathan gave an answer before
        going in prayer with God.
    2. God gave Nathan a historical perspective of His dealing with the nation
regarding worship and the tent built for worship.
    3. God only dwelt or walked through the tent at the time of worship.
B. The tent served the purpose of divine worship and atonement of sins.
   1. In effect, God told Nathan, If I wanted a house of worship, it would
       have been built.
   2. The tent was designed to be moved from place to place as Israel
        moved through the promised land.

C. Since David did not go to God in prayer about building a house for Him,
     God gave Nathan the answer.
    1. We serve a God that is waiting to hear our prayers and petitions.
    2. We do not need someone to go to God for us.

    3. It is good for others to pray for us, but our requests are

        just as effective.
    4. Our prayers in faith in the name Jesus to the Father are effective.
.
GOD HAS THE BEST PLAN FOR US
V:8. "Now then, tell my servant, David, 'This is what the Lord  Almighty says: I took you from the pasture and from following the flock to be ruler over my people Israel. 9 I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men of the earth. 10 And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning 11 and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies.
A. David’s heart was in the right place, but he desired to do for
God, what was not planned for him to do.
   1. Each of us has a job to do for God that is included in His divine plan
       of redemption.
   2. God’s design includes a replacement for us, once our part is complete.
   3. God will let us know when our work is good enough for Him.
B. There are times when God causes us to reflect on what He has done
in our lives to get us to the present.
   1. When we look back at where we started from, we will be able to see
God hand in our lives every step of our journey.
   2. If we are truthful with ourselves, we will recognize that if it had not
been for the Lord on our side, we would not be here today.
   3. Any accomplishments we can see in our lives has been by the grace
       of God.
   4. Because we are still here, God still has work for us to do.
C. Look at the word rest in verse 11.
    1. When we decide to serve the Lord, He goes beyond our expectations
does for us what we cannot do.
    2. God promises us rest from our labors.
    3. On the seventh day of creation, God rested. Gen 2:1-3

        a. After giving Israel His commands, God set the Sabbath day
as a day of rest.    Exodus 20:8-11
        b. All believers who take on the yoke of Christ is given rest.
            Matthew 11:28-11
        c. In the new heaven when Jesus sits on His throne, all believers will
be given eternal rest. Isa 11:1-12
      4. David wanted to build a house for the Lord, but God built a dynasty
          to his name.

GOD BLESSES THOSE WHO SERVE HIM
V:11. The Lord declares to you that the Lord himself will establish a house for you: 12 When your days are over and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

A. When you decide to serve the Lord, He will give you success in
     your life.
    1. God not only blesses you but also your descendants.

    2. All of us will face physical death.

    3. Gods blessing extends beyond your life into the lives of your
        family.
     4. God will select someone from your family to continue the
work that you started for Him.
B. God was pleased with King David’s desire to build a house for Him.
     1. God gave King David rest from his labors.

     2. David had the vision, but his son would complete it.
     3. God looks beyond our temporary position and sees our eternal
         position.
      4. God takes our desires to please Him and turns them into future
          successes.

      5. If you want true and lasting success in your life, focus all your
          activities on pleasing God.

DISCIPLINED FOR SUCCESS
V;14.  I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with the rod of men, with floggings inflicted by men. 15 But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16 Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.'"
17 Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.
A. When we are not around, God becomes the Father to our children.
     1. God promised success for David’s son.
     2. A key component to our success is discipline.
     3. No athlete is successful without being disciplined in his/her sport.

     4. The Father shows His love by disciplining us when we are wrong.
B. God knows beforehand that we will not always do the right things.
     1. God loves us enough to tolerate our sinfulness while He brings
back in right fellowship with Him.
     2. God’s plan for our lives does not depend on us, but His grace and
         mercy.
     3. God has a plan for the success of our future generations, but it
but it starts with our faithfulness.
C. There are two prophecies in this verse; One near term
     and one long term.
     1. The near term is Solomon, David's son became king after
David’s death and built the temple for the Lord.
     2. The long term is from David’s descendants came the Messiah,
          Jesus Christ, the King forever.
     3. David wanted to build a house for God, but God built a family dynasty
         for David.
     4. David wanted to honor God with his service, but God honored David
         with a legacy.
     5. When you decide to honor God with what He has blessed you with,
God will bless you with more than you can imagine.
