This Week's Sunday School Lesson, "The Cross Of God Designed For Us", Isaiah 52:13-53;12, 3/29/2020

THE CROSS OF JESUS DESIGNED FOR US

Isa 52:13-53:13

THE EXALTED JESUS
52:13 See, my servant will act wisely; he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted. 14 Just as many were appalled at him
his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man
and his form marred beyond human likeness.
A. This prophecy is about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ 740 years
before his birth (According to C.I. Scofield).
   1. God the Father, revealed to Isaiah His exaltation and His
       crucifixion.
    2. The crucifixion was the means to an end, a divinely appointed
         end.
    3. The nation of Israel was completely out of fellowship the Father.
    4. They had rejected God rule over them and refused to worship
         Him,
    5. As a result, the Lord promised the chastisement of the nation
        (verse 1:24).
 B. The Lord is merciful and gracious toward us.
     1. He promised the exaltation of a Savior.
     2. The extreme humiliation of the cross preceded Jesus' exaltation.
     3. According to the text he beat with a whip laden with bone and
         metal.
     4. After 39 latches, the back of Jesus was probable completely
bare of skin and covered with blood.
         a. The end of this humiliation; by His stripes, we are healed
      5. According to the text, Jesus was beaten beyond human
           recognition.
         b. The end of this; our recognition by the Savior.
         b. Jesus' humiliation became our exaltation.

JESUS ON THE THRONE
V:15. so will he sprinkle many nations, and kings will shut their mouths
because of him. For what they were not told, they will see,
and what they have not heard, they will understand.
A. The word “sprinkle” is the Hebrew word “nazar”, which
      means spurt or spatter.
    1. I suggest that in the context it mean to cleanse those who
accept Jesus as their personal Savior.
    2.  Ezek 36:25
I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse
you from all your impurities and all your idols.
     3. The word of God has spread throughout the world following
the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
    4. During the crucifixion, some came to a knowledge of Christ.
        a. Simon from Cyrene, got the blood of Jesus on his back
            carrying the cross of Jesus.
        b. On a cross next to Jesus, a convicted murderer confessed
            his sins and received salvation.
        c. At the death of Jesus, Roman guards proclaim Jesus as
            the Son of God.

           Matt 27:54
When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus
saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified,
and exclaimed, "Surely he was the Son of God!"

B. God gave Herod one last chance to proclaim Jesus as Lord.
    1. Acts 12:23
Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the
Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.

     2. What if this coronavirus is a warning from God that He
         is no respecter of person.
         a. The old, the young, the rich, the poor, the strong and the weak
are all affected by this virus.
         b. What if God is giving us as a world, one last chance to praise Him.
     3. I know a God who can put an end to this virus today.
         a. I know the way to get God’s attention.
         b. Praise God with all your heart. Psalms 22:3 says
God inhabits the praise of His people.
         c. Go to God in prayer and ask Him for an end to this virus.

              James 5:16
Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye
may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man
          availeth much.

THE OBEDIENT LIFE OF JESUS
V.53:1. Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord
     been revealed?
     2. He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry
ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
A. This appears to describe the early life of Jesus before He started His
     Earthly ministry.
    1. All we know about the early life of Jesus is that He grew in the
        Spirit.

      Luke 2:51-52
Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But
his mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus grew in
wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
 2. Notice Jesus set the example for us to train our children.
     a. He was obedient to his earthly parents.
     b. He was God, yet obedient to the authority the Father placed
         over Him.
     c. As a result, He had the favor of the Father and men.
 3. If we want our children to have favor, we need to be sure to train
them to be obedient and respectful of us as parents and
     others in charge.
B. God charged Isaiah with the responsibility of warning Israel of
     His upcoming chastisement.
    1. Israel rejected God’s rule commands in favor of the lifestyle
        of the surrounding nations.
    2. They claim God for protection, but idol gods for living.
    3.  One hundred years later, Jerusalem would be burnt to the
ground and Israel would be exiled into Babylon.
    4. God is so tolerant that He gave Israel 100 years to repent
        and return to Him.
     5. They did not believe the prophet.
     6. In 2020, where are we in our relationship with God?
    7. Is this worldwide coronavirus a warning from God?

THE REJECTED MINISTRY OF JESUS
V:3. He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.
Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
4 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows,
yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted.
A.
This describes the hatred of men during the earthly ministry of Jesus
     1. He was born into a poor family

         Mark 6:3
Isn't this the carpenter? Isn't this Mary's son and the brother of James,
Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?" And they
         took offense at him.

     2. His family lived in a city that had a history of being bad.

       John 1:46
"Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Nathanael asked.
    3. Whatever good Jesus did was despised by men.

         Luke 19:47-48
Every day he was teaching at the temple. But the chief priests, the
teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill
        him.

4. The attitude of the Jews grieved Jesus.

     Mark 3:5
And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved
for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine
hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the
     other.
5. There are some folk who don't want to see your recovery
     a. They would rather leave you in a destitute situation than lend
          a helping hand.
     b. But the God we serve is compassionate enough to restore us
         to our full potential.
B. Jesus went to cross to provide salvation for the whole world.
    1. Many that He died for, yelled crucify Him even though the
        Roman government found Him innocent.
    2. At the Father's command, He committed Himself to die.
    3. He knew the horror and the pain of crucifixions.
 C.  In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus went God in prayer
       with a grieved heart.

       Matt 26:39
He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, "O My
Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I
       will, but as You will.
     1. In prayer on the cross, Jesus was grieved as He witnessed the harden
         hearts of His people.

         Matt 27:46
Eloi, Eloi,c lama sabachthani?"-which means, "My God, my God, why
         have you forsaken me?"
     2. Today, does the Lord have reason to ask you and me that question?
“My people, My people, why have you forsaken Me?”

THE BENEFIT OF THE CROSS
V:5.  But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace
was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.
6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own
way; and the Lord  has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
 7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth;
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers
is silent, so he did not open his mouth.
A. Six hundred years before His death Jesus revealed to Isaiah in detail
     His death on the cross.
   1. First, we have the reason for the cross
       a. Pierced for our transgressions.
       b. Crushed for our iniquities.
       c. Can you see the skin of Jesus back being ripped
apart by Roman whip, 39 times?
       d. Can you see the Roman sword piercing the side
Jesus on the cross for you?
    2. Second, we have the result of Jesus' agony on the cross.
       a. Reconciliation with the Father; peace.
       b. We are healed of all of trials and tribulations
we will experience in this life
   3. Third, our current lifestyle and attitude and the
       way of salvation.
       a. We have rejected God's way for our way in sin.
       b. God laid all of our sins on the back of Jesus.
       c. Can you see all your lies, your hate, your envy, your
unforgiving spirit buried in the ripped skin of Jesus?
       d. Can you see God’s forgiveness in the blood of Jesus
    4. Forth you see the attitude of Jesus headed to the cross.
        a. Jesus went willingly to the cross.
        b. He did not object to torture He received.
        c. Can you see Jesus on the cross in pain with your
            salvation on His mind?
        d. Can you see Jesus dying on the cross securing your
            place in heaven?

REDEMPTION AT THE CROSS
V:8. By oppression and judgment he was taken away.
And who can speak of his descendants?
For he was cut off from the land of the living;
for the transgression of my people he was stricken.
9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked,
and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence,
nor was any deceit in his mouth.
A. Can you see an innocent man saying to the Father, I will
Take_____(add your name) punishment? Kill me for
      ______( add your name).

      John 10:17-18
Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I
       might take it again.
No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself.

THE PLAN OF THE FATHER TO CRUCIFY THE SON
V:10. Yet it was the Lord 's will to crush him and cause him to suffer,
and though the Lord makes his life a guilt offering,
he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.

JESUS ON THE THRONE
V:11 After the suffering of his soul,
 he will see the light [of life] and be satisfied;
by his knowledge of my righteous servant will justify many,
and he will bear their iniquities.
A. This is a prophecy of the Lord’s death and resurrection and
   the establishment of His Church.
   1. God allowed His Son to die for our sins
   2. God made Himself an acceptable offering for our sins
   3. God used evil man to do His will to bring about our
       place in Heaven.
    4. God planned all this out before the foundation of the
        world.
B. Second, we see the resurrection of Jesus as King of Kings.
    1. In this prophecy is the success of the Church.
    2. We also see the continuing justification of those called
out of the world to be the church of Jesus.
    3. The blood that Jesus shed on the cross will never lose
its power to save sinners. (verse 11).
    4. It is good news that Jesus requires nothing from us
but faith in His death (John 3:16).

JESUS OUR INTERCESSOR
V:12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,
and he will divide the spoils with the strong,
because he poured out his life unto death,
and was numbered with the transgressors.
For he bore the sin of many,
and made intercession for the transgressors.
A. The wages of sin is death.
     1. Jesus took on our sins, past. Present and future
in His death on the cross.
     2. Jesus the judge, took the place of us to satisfy His
         own law.
       a. We could die for ourselves because of our sins.
       b. Jesus interceded with Himself for us.
 B. The GOOD NEWS is Jesus is still interceding for us.
     1. Consider this, every time you sin, the blood of Jesus
shed on the cross covers you.
     2. Every time someone treats you wrong, the broken
torn flesh of Jesus comforts you.

What Jesus is telling you today is you got worth
You are worth the price He paid on the cross

You are His love. The love He showed you on the cross
