Bible Series: The Work Of The Holy Spirit In The Church

THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE CHURCH

The study of the Holy Spirit is Pneumatology

The Old Testament word for spirit is ruach, which is breath or wind    Genesis 1:2

The New Testament word for spirit is pneuma which is breath, blow       Luke 1:67, Luke 4:18

The spirit is the immaterial, invisible part of man   Luke 8:55

THE HOLY SPIRIT FORMS THE CHURCH

The Spirit puts the Church together and is the glue that holds the Church together

1 Corinthians 12:12-14

The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body — whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free — and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

Every believer is a building block in the church and has

A has a specific divine place and function. Ephesians 2:19

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE POWER OF THE CHURCH

Without the Holy Spirit, no work for Christ can be done,

Acts 1:8

8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

NIV

THE SPIRIT GROWS THE CHURCH   Acts 9:31

The Spirit encourages the Church

The Spirit strengthens the Church

THE SPIRIT DIRECTS THE CHURCH

Acts 20:22

"And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there.

Sometimes the spirit will direct you to do something

That does not make sense.

The Apostle Paul was compelled to go to Jerusalem

Knowing that leading Jews wanted to kill him.

THE SPIRIT GIVES US CONFIDENCE IN THE LORD

Romans 8:16

The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.

The Spirit gives confidence that we are heirs of God

The Spirit gives us confidence that we are co-heirs with

Christ

The Spirit makes it known to us that we will suffer, but

At the same time, it gives us confidence that we will share

Christ glory

The Spirit gives us confidence that when we are weak,

He is our help

The Spirit gives us confidence that our prayers are heard.

It is the Spirit that intercedes for us in prayer               Romans 8:26

The Spirit has set us free from all the fears of the world

Romans 8:15

THE SPIRIT EQUIPS THE CHURCH WITH GIFTS FOR

THE COMMON GOOD

1 Corinthians 12:7

Now to each one, the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

              SPIRITUAL GIFTS

              Message of Wisdom

              Message of Knowledge

              Faith

              Healing

              Miraculous powers

              Prophecy (not new revelations)

              Languages

              Administration

              Helps

              Encouragement

THE SPIRIT APPOINTS CHURCH LEADERS

Ephesians 4:11-13

11 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.

THE HOLY SPIRIT IN SALVATION

Ephesians 1:13-14

And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession — to the praise of his glory.

The Greek word for heard is ahouo which means to

Understand.

The only understanding of the Word of God comes through the Holy Spirit    John 14:26

To hear the gospel of truth, God placed a believer in

You like to proclaim it

Belief or faith comes from God, To each is given a measure of faith.

The seal is the King’s private stamp of approval

You are given a guarantee of redemption

THE HOLY SPIRIT IN SANCTIFICATION

Romans 15:15-16

because of the grace God gave me 16 to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles with the priestly duty of proclaiming the gospel of God, so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy Spirit

NIV

To sanctify an object means to wash, cleanse, consecrate or set it aside for a special purpose. Sanctification is a Christian teaching about how God transforms a person, making them fit for a holy purpose. Sanctification includes a change of heart, a desire to love God and other people. It includes a change of mind, seeing the world from an honest perspective. It includes embracing the truth about life, one’s self and others. And in the future, sanctification includes a change in the body, healing and perfecting what it means to be human.

THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE WORLD

John 16:7-11

Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS OUR PERSONAL

              COUNSELOR

               CONVICT THE WORLD OF SIN

CONVICT THE WORLD OF THE JUDGEMENT

               AND THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD

THE PRINCE OF THE WORLD, THE DEVIL

               STAND CONDEMNED

THE HOLY SPIRIT IN BAPTISM

Acts 11:16

Then I remembered what the Lord had said: 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'

The baptism of the Holy Spirit may be defined as that work whereby the Spirit of God places the believer into union with Christ and into union with other believers in the body of Christ at the moment of salvation. The baptism of the Holy Spirit was predicted by John the Baptist (Mark 1:8) and by Jesus before He ascended to heaven: (gotquestions .org)

The baptism is made possible through the death and

Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ

1 Corinthians 12:13

For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body — whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free — and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.

NIV
