Bible Study Series: Have A Little Talk With Jesus, Genesis 24:23

HAVE A LITTLE TALK WITH JESUS

Genesis 24:63

"Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide."

Can you imagine sitting out on the back porch late in the evening,

When the sun is down, just having a little talk with Jesus. Everybody

is in the house and you all by yourself. You not worried about

Anything. You just talking with Jesus. It is not a prayer where you

Asking for anything. You are just talking with Jesus.

It's just you and your best friend, remembering the good time.  Or

Maybe you just talking about how far you have come.

You are remembering the good times and the bad times and it all

Good.

Genesis 3:8

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day.

Notice it was God’s physical presence. They heard his foot steps in the garden.

It was when the sun had gone down and evening cool down had taken place

It was after the daily chores was completed. It was a time when they rested

And relaxed.

No man has seen God at any time but He made presence known. All their

Senses were heighten. Hearing, they heard his foot steps. Mind, they could

Distinguish between the sound of God and the sound of animals. Sight,

They were in the garden,

I can imagine Adam and Eve at days end talking with God about the beauty

In the garden of Eden.

Can you imaging Adam talking to God about all the species of animals

He named.

It should be an exciting time talking with the Lord.

Can you imagine Eve asking God about all the trees and plants and flowers?

What a conversation of discovery just talking with Jesus

In this text, the servant of Abraham took an oath to go to Nahor

To find a wife for Isaac. Abraham wanted his son to marry

A family member. Nahor was 500 plus miles from Hebron where

Abraham resided. A journey by a camel took 17 to 20 days.

Hebron was in the land of the Canaanites which God had promised to

Abraham and his descendants.

Abraham’s devoted servant under the guidance of the Lord set

Some requirements to determine the right mate for Isaac.

Genesis 24:12-14

Then he prayed, "O Lord, God of my master Abraham, give me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. 13 See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. 14 May it be that when I say to a girl, 'Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,' and she says, 'Drink, and I'll water your camels too' — let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master."

Every important decision ought to be discussed with Lord. God will give you the

Intuition you need and guide you in your decision.

When you looking for a mate, you should to have some requirements.

1.     She was an obedient girl.

2.     She was a respectful person.

3.     She was a generous person.

4.     She was a kind person

5.     She was not a flirty person.

6.     She was under the guidance of the Lord.

Genesis 24:15-17

Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milcah, who was the wife of Abraham's brother Nahor. 16 The girl was very beautiful, a virgin; no man had ever lain with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar, and came up again.

Abraham’s servant made arrangement with Rebekah’s parents and

Paid a diary.  He took Rebekah back to Hebron to meet Isaac.

Genesis 24:62-64

Now Isaac had come from Beer Lahai Roi, for he was living in the Negev. 63 He went out to the field one evening to meditate, and as he looked up, he saw camels approaching.

Isaac was not part of His father’s oath or the servants’ negotiations

With Rebekah’s parents. Isaac has not seen and did not know Rebekah.

Your father may make plans concerning you. Your mother may make plans

Concerning you. Others may make plans concerning you. But the ultimate

Decision concerning your life is up to you.

Rebekah made a decision to come to Hebron.

Genesis 24:57-58

Then they said, "Let's call the girl and ask her about it." 58 So they called Rebekah and asked her, "Will you go with this man?". "I will go," she said.

The text does not tell us that anybody asked Isaac what he wanted.

God has a way of bringing us to the right the decision if we have a little

Talk with Him.

Genesis 24:63

He (Isaac) went out to the field one evening to meditate.

Isaac didn’t meditate with his father. He didn’t meditate with

His friends. He talked it over with his heavenly Father.

Isaac still in morning at the death of his mother, needed God’s council.

God can console you and set you in the right direction.

While you trying to figure it out, God has already worked it out.

God uses other people to work on your behalf to get you where

You need to be and to get you what He wants you to have.

While Isaac was in prayer, Abrahams servant who travelled 1000 miles

Round trip came with Rebekah, a blessing from the Lord.

THE BENEFITS OF PRAYER

1.   THE PRAYERS OF THE RIGHTEOUS ACCOMPISHES MUCH

            Genesis 24:63-64

He (Isaac) went out to the field one evening to meditate, and as he looked up, he saw camels approaching. 64 Rebekah also looked up and saw Isaac. She got down from her camel

Genesis 24:67

Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah, and he married Rebekah.

All the time, you need have a LITTLE TALK WITH JESUS

2.   FOR BELIEVERS, PRAYER IS A REQUIREMENT NOT AN OPTION

In this day and time there are too many things that we cannot control,

And we need God’s guidance.

God is not the one we go to at last resort. God is the one we go to

First. We should never start our day thinking we know what to do.

We should start our day knowing we are not in control, but God is.

We got a friend in Jesus who wants to hear all our troubles.

3.   PRAYER IS A TWO-WAY CONVERSATION WITH GOD

Prayer is not a time to dump our problems on the Lord.

Fellowship with the Lord is partnership with Lord.

Partnership with the Lord means we are working together

To advance the kingdom of God.

4.   PRAYER FORCES US TO REACH FOR HIGHER GROUND

The problems we face may indicate areas of weakness and

Area of improvement in our spiritual growth.

Problems my teach us to look to the Lord for solutions beyond

Our abilities.

5.   PRAYER IS RELATIONSHIP BUILDING

Talking to God is important in building a relationship with Him.

When we study God’s Word, He is communicating a message to us.

Meditating on the Word helps us understand through the power of

The Holy Spirit.

What troubles us sometime is our ignorance of God’s purpose.

Troubles are not always bad, sometimes they are the reason to move in

New directions.

In Acts 16:9, The Apostle Paul wanted to move the ministry to Asia,

But the Holy Spirit blocked Him. Paul was given the vision to take

Ministry to Macedonia.

6.   TALKING TO GOD IS AN ACT OF FAITH

Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.

When we focus on what going on in the world, it distracts our

Attention from the purpose of God.

When we focus on our own problems we may miss the reason for

For the problems

7.   GOD ANSWERS PRAYERS

James 5:16

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

8.   GOD DIRECTS US IN PRAYER

Psalms 37:23

The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.

9.   PRAYER BENEFITS  THE LIVES OF OTHERS

James 5:14-16

Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.

10.                PRAYER GETS RID OF FEAR

2 Timothy 1:7

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

11.                PRAYER ELIMINATES WORRY

Matthew 6:25-27

"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

12.                PRAYER GETS YOU THE DESIRES OF YOUR HEART

Psalms 37:4

Delight yourself in the Lord

and he will give you the desires of your heart.

13.                PRAYER OF CONFESSION RESTORES FELLOWSHIP

         WITH THE LORD

Nehemiah 9:3

They stood where they were and read from the Book of the Law of the Lord their God for a quarter of the day, and spent another quarter in confession and in worshiping the Lord their God

14.                PRAYER BRINGS HOPE IN OUR LIVES

The key to joyous living is to remember that God is in control.

Philippians 3:20-21

Jesus Christ,  who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

Charles Spurgeon wrote;

If those who spend so many hours in idle company, light reading, and useless pastimes, could learn wisdom, they would find more profitable society and more interesting engagements in meditation than in the vanities which now have such charms for them.

We should all know more, live nearer to God, and grow in grace, if we were more alone. Meditation chews the cud and extracts the real nutriment from the mental food gathered elsewhere. When Jesus is the theme, meditation is sweet indeed. Isaac found Rebecca while engaged in private musings; many others have found their best beloved there.
