Bible Study Series: Stirried Up For Jesus, 2 Peter 3:1-9

STIRRED UP FOR JESUS

2 Peter 3:1-10

In the world today people are stirred up. They are stirred up to

Violence, stirred up to complacency or stirred up to the righteousness of

God.

The headline news is full of people stirred up who commit violent acts.

The breaking news is usually something tragic.  All too often there is violence

On the streets and in our neighborhoods. Mass murders, robbery road rage,

And drive-by shootings have become normal daily events. Some people have decided to take what they want by force and murder. This group is stirred up by the adversary, Satan himself.

The second group you rarely hear from. They include most of the world.

They are complacent.  They see and hear, but sit by say nothing and do

Nothing.

This third group are stirred up by the word of God through the working

Of the Holy Spirit. However, they generally remain silent until something

Tragic happens or some event that affects them personally.

Peter reminds all believers that the job of a Christian is not one of violence,

Complacency or silence. We have a responsibility to our Father, this

Presence generation and future generations to act on the word of God.

STIRRED UP TO REMEMBER THE WORD

V:3.1  This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:

2 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:

A.    The word stir means to awake or arouse.

1.     It is easy to have knowledge of the Word but not be aroused to

Act on the Word.

2.      It is the job of the Holy Spirit to remind us of the Word of God

And stir us up to follow God’s commands.

3.     The first question is, are we listening?

4.     The second question is, will we submit ourselves to the guidance of

The Holy Spirit?

B.     According to Peter, we are influenced by the flesh and the Holy Spirit.

1.     Peter appeals to the pure mind, the one controlled by the Holy Spirit.

2.     2 Timothy 1:7 states that God has not given us the spirit of fear, but power love and sound mind.

a.     A mind controlled by the flesh will not be sound for long.

b.     A mind controlled by the flesh opposes God.

C.     The Word from Both the Old and New Testaments are included in these

Verses.

a.     The Old Testament is the Word recorded by the Holy prophets.

b.     The New Testament was the Words that were recorded by the

Apostles of Jesus Christ.

D.    When we study God’s, Word we should be stirred up in the Spirit.

1.     We should be convicted to be like Jesus.

2.     We should be convicted to act on God’s commands.

3.     The Word is important to our soul salvation.

4.     The Word should stir us up to act as citizens of Heaven.

STIRRED UP TO KNOW FALSE TEACHERS

V.3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last day's scoffers, walking after their own lusts,

4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.

5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:

A.    It is apparent that we are in the last days.

1.     The Lord has described the conditions of the last days in detail.

2.     2 Timothy 3:1-5

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.

B.     Peter also describes a falling away of the Church pretenders.

1.     The word scoffer refers to false teachers.

2.     Notice verse 5 of Peter,  “They are willingly ignorant of the Word of God.”

3.     Scoffers read the Word but have no conviction of the Word

Because they lack the Holy Spirit.

4.     Only believers can receive the Word of God

5.     To be ignorant of the Word of God is to neglect the study of

Word and to willfully disobey God’s commands.

C.     Peter reminds us of the power of God in the creation and the destruction of mankind in the flood.

1.     The earth was created in water and man was destroyed by the waters of

The flood.

2.     God is in control of His creation and will deal with sin according to

His divine Will.

D.    We need to be careful of what preachers we listen to.

1.     Not every so-called church preaches the entirety of God’s Word.

2.     Any preacher who preaches acceptance of what God hates is a

False teacher.

3.     The Church is a community of have been.

4.     We have been everything that God hates.

5.     When we accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior we were changed

To love what God loves and hate what God hates.

Peter reminds us to STIR UP God’s commands.

6.     If we don’t STIR UP the love of God, we will begin to look

Like the world.

STIRRED UP TO REMEMBER THE PENALTY OF SIN

V:6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:

7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

A.    Notice it was by God’s Mercy that He left intact the earth he created

During the flood but saved Noah and his family who were obedient to God, to replenish the earth with a new generation of families.

1.     God gave man another chance to meet the Jesus of our salvation.

2.     It was by God Mercy that He didn’t destroy all evidence of the

Generations of Adam and Eve.

B.     God kept a remnant of Adam and Eve to fulfill the promise made

In the Garden of Eve of a Savior   Genesis 3:16.

1.     God’s Sovereignty included the sin of man, the destruction of

Man by the flood, and the restart in righteous of a new generation of man.

2.     It is the mercy of God to allow us to review the history of the destruction of man by the flood.

3.     With the knowledge of the flood, we can conceive with fear the destruction of this Current generation of ungodliness by fire.

STIRRED UP TO REMEMBER THE TOLERANCE OF GOD

V:8. But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day.

9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Have you ever wondered why God allows bad folk to continue to

Exist and profit from all kinds of evil?

1.     Ever wondered why bad things continue to happen to good people

As a result of evil men?

2.     God gives us several reasons.

3.     God’s promise of a judgment of this evil world is still in force.

4.     God is not in your time frame. He does not measure time

By your standards,

5.     What God said He will do, He will do.

6.     God will not destroy the earth until everyone He gave to Jesus

Has received salvation.

John 6:39-40

And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40 For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day."

7.     There are some given to Jesus who has not been

 born.

8.     God is tolerant of our sinfulness until He brings about a change.

A.    God has a plan for the destruction of this earth and all evil.

1.     The current Heaven is corrupt because of the sin of Satan.

2.     The current heaven will pass away and a new heaven will

Replace it.

3.     All the elements of this current earth will be dissolved by fire

And new earth will replace it

B.     We know we are in the “end times”, just before Jesus return for

His Church.

1.     We don’t have a date when will come but we know is near.

2.

Matthew 24:36

"No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

3.     We must remember that a thousand years is as a day to the

Lord.

STIRRED UP TO GET READY FOR HEAVEN

2 Peter 3:10

But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

A.  Life on earth has an end.

Matthew 24:42-44

"Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”

B.     2 Peter 1:13-14

13 Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;

14 Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.

1.     It is the job of the preacher to remind you that your time on earth is

Temporary.

2.     The preacher should stir you up to live a life worthy of the praise

Of God.

3.     There is no promise of tomorrow for you.

a.     All you have is this moment to get ready for the Lord’s call

To heaven.

b.     Romans 12:1

12 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

C.     2 Timothy 1:6

Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God,

which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

1.     While we are still in this life we are commanded to use God’s

Time wisely

2.     It is the job of the preacher to make you uncomfortable with your

Service.

John 15:2

Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

3.     God does not want us to become complacent with our service to Him.

4.     We have but one goal and that is to glorify God with our works.

Ephesians 2:10

For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
