This Week's Sunday School Lesson, What You Have Is Enough To Serve God, 1 Samuel 17:40-51, 8/9/2020

WHAT YOU HAVE IS ENOUGH FOR GOD

1 Sam 17:40-51

When you look at scripture, what do you see? I see the Word of God to His people.  I see the Word of God to me, in my time and

my situation.

Why do you think God chose to highlight this battle between David

And Goliath?

Let me suggest a few reasons.

   1. The nation of Israel had rejected God's rule over them in favor

of a king. God gave them Saul.

   2. David had been anointed the next king of Israel under Saul

   3. He was a man after God’s own heart.

   4. God introduced David to the nation as a man who trusted God.

   5. He introduced David as the one who would bring success over the

Philistines with the full armor of God.

   6. God may have used this battle to encourage David in his future kingship.

SERVE GOD WITH WHAT YOU HAVE

V:40 Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd's bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.

41 Meanwhile, the Philistine, with his shield bearer in front of him, kept coming closer to David. 42 He looked David over and saw that he was only a boy, ruddy and handsome, and he despised him. 43 He said to David, "Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?" And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 "Come here," he said, "and I'll give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!"

A. True lasting success is not possible without God.

     1. Israel having rejected God, found themselves in a battle they couldn't

          win.

     2. The Philistines unleashed their secret weapon, a 9 feet Goliath

          who boasted of his strength.

     3. He put fear in the minds and hearts of King Saul and his army.

B. David a youth, was sent to the battlefield by his father, Jesse

to bring lunch to his brothers.

      1. Hearing the story of the pride of Goliath, and the fear of the

king and the Israelite army, David volunteered to fight Goliath.

      2. Hearing the faith of David in the God he served, the king

was dismayed, but allowed him to face Goliath.

      3. King Saul dressed David in battle armor, but David decided to

fight only with the full amour of God.

      4. David didn’t consider the vain threats, the size or strength of Goliath.

He only saw God as the victory.

      5. David’s armor was his faith in God.

      6. All we need to face the giants of our lives is faith in Jesus.

B. God will use what you got to bring about success in your life.

     1. David faced Goliath with only a slingshot and five smooth rocks.

     2. Why do you think God highlighted the five smooth stones?

     3. Let me suggest five Christian principles.

         a. His faith; He trusted God’s deliverance.

         b. His service; He offered himself for service.

         c. His prayer; He had constant communication with God in prayer.

         d. His obedience; He followed the commands that were given to him.

         e. His love; He loved the Lord and his nation.

      4. The first five books of the Bible is the Law or Torah

These are five books of divine instructions.

      5. God provides a solution to all your troubling situations.

There is nothing new under the sun.

STAND IN THE NAME OF THE LORD

V:45 David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord  Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will hand you over to me, and I'll strike you down and cut off your head. Today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. 47 All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord  saves; for the battle is the Lord 's, and he will give all of you into our hands."

A. David answered Goliath’s threat with His faith in God.

        Eph 6:13-15

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil

comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done

everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled

around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,

and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel

        of peace.

  1. David claimed the victory before the battle started.

     2. If you going to boast, boast in the Lord.

     3. God can back you up, so your boasting will not be in vain.

     4. There is nothing to hard for God.

     5. When your desire is the will of God, success is guaranteed.

B. Before you open your mouth, go to God in prayer.

    1. Allow the Lord to speak through you.

    2. Give God the glory in all your successes.

            Luke 12:11-12

When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do

not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will

say,  for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should

              say."

      2. David acknowledged God as Israel’s salvation.

      3. Likewise, God is your salvation

MOVE QUICKLY, AS GOD ORDERS YOUR STEPS

V:48.  As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. 49 Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.

50 So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand, he struck down the Philistine and killed him.

51 David ran and stood over him. He took hold of the Philistine's sword and drew it from the scabbard. After he killed him, he cut off his head with the sword.

A. It was the Holy Spirit that guided the stone from Davis’s hand to

the right opening in Goliath’s helmet to kill him.

     1. David, without fear, ran to the fallen Goliath, picked up the sword

of Goliath and cut his head off.

     2. The Philistine army was standing by and did not make a charge

          toward David.

 B. God gives us favor when we give Him the glory.

      1. From the start, David claimed victory in the name of the Lord and the

          defeat of the enemy.

          Ps 18:32-35

It is God who arms me with strength

         and makes my way perfect.

         He makes my feet like the feet of a deer;

he enables me to stand on the heights.

         He trains my hands for battle;

my arms can bend a bow of bronze.

You give me your shield of victory,

          and your right hand sustains me;

    2. When trouble comes your way, claim victory in God.

YOUR FAITH WILL ENCOURAGE OTHERS

V:51. When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran. 52 Then the men of Israel and Judah surged forward with a shout and pursued the Philistines to the entrance of Gathg and to the gates of Ekron. Their dead were strewn along the Shaaraim road to Gath and Ekron.

A. Your faith in God encourages the faith in other believers.

     1. When other believers see you acting in faith, they will respond in

         faith.

     2. Allow God to use you to be the light to other believers.

B. Israel had rejected God but saw His glory through David.

    1. The Philistines became weak with fear and Israel became strong

with courage because of David claim of victory in the Lord.

    2. They saw with their own eyes the uselessness of their idol gods.
