Bible Study Lesson What God's Has For You Is For You, 1 KIngs 1

WHAT GOD HAS FOR YOU IS FOR YOU

1 Kings 1:5-7

5 Now Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, put himself forward and said, "I will be king." So he got chariots and horses ready, with fifty men to run ahead of him. 6 (His father had never interfered with him by asking, "Why do you behave as you do?" He was also very handsome and was born next after Absalom.)

TRAIN YOUR CHILDREN TO FOLLOW GOD

If we don’t train our children in the way of the Lord, the devil will influence

them in the way of the world.

According to the Word, an indiscipline child will bring heart aches to the parents

King David knew his son was foolish and irrational, but failed to correct him or

discipline him. He may have thought like some of us, "Boys will be boys".

The text says Abonijah was a good-looking man. When a person thinks they

look good, they may develop a prideful and self-important attitude

Proverbs 19:18-19

18 Discipline your son, for in that there is hope;

do not be a willing party to his death.

A DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY

King David had a very dysfunctional family by his doings. He had several wives

whose sons aspired to be king. His family life took a turn for the worse when

he violated Bathsheba, the wife of his trusted soldier. To save himself David

set up Bathsheba's husband to be killed in battle. He married her and Solomon

was born.

That act of lust set up David for a family of opposition throughout his life.

Haggith was one of David's wives. Her oldest son Absalom led an army of 4000

men to overthrow King David. All were killed including Absalom. Adonijah

the second son of Haggith and David waited until his father was old and dying

before trying to set himself up as king. As the oldest living son of David, he

thought the throne belonged to him.

PRIDE THE DOWNFALL OF MAN

Adonijah exalted himself before man and God

He wanted the throne for himself and not for the good of the nation

God hates the proud

Proverbs 16:18

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall

Psalms 10:4

In his pride, the wicked does not seek him, in all his thoughts there is no room

for God

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH GODLY PEOPLE

Surround yourself with people you trust to support you and have the courage

to speak up on your behalf and tell you the truth.

Adonijah surrounded himself with “yes men”. Men who were looking out for

their best interest. They knew that if Adonijah became king their positions

would be elevated and secure.

You need extra eyes and ears that can be at places you are not and has

the courage to inform you about people plan to do you harm

David had learned through his many years as king to surround himself

with highly qualified men who were devoted to Him

Adonijah surrounded himself with yes-men

Men who were looking for fame and position

Men who did not have the courage to tell him he was wrong.

DON’T CLAIM WHAT GOD HAS NOT GIVEN YOU

Don’t claim what God has not given you

In today's church environment, there is a name and claim in theology. It stems

from a misinterpretation of scripture. For example;

Matthew 18:19

19 "Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.

There cannot be any sin in the request. It Cannot be any selfishness in the request. It must be

ask so God gets the glory.

Adonijah claimed the Kingship out of selfishness, not for the good of the nation. He had

several to agree with him on taking the kingship

To claim what God has not given you is to devalue what God has for you

To claim what God has not given you is to say God doesn't know what is best for you

To claim what God has not given you is to devalue the purpose and worth of God’s plan

WHAT YOU DO IN SECRET WILL BE MADE KNOWN

If it has to be done in secret, it is probably wrong

It is not a secret if more than one person knows it

Adonijah had a group of men who agreed with him

and paraded himself a king. He attempted to persuade King David's

trusted men to join him in taking the throne.

1 Kings 1:7-11

7 Adonijah conferred with Joab son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest, and they gave him their support. 8 But Zadok the priest, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei and Rei, and David's special guard did not join Adonijah.

9 Adonijah then sacrificed sheep, cattle, and fattened calves at the Stone of Zoheleth near En Rogel. He invited all his brothers, the king's sons, and all the men of Judah who were royal officials, 10 but he did not invite Nathan the prophet Benaiah the special guard, or his brother Solomon.

Adonijah did not tell King David, who he knew was bedridden and in a helpless

state. He intended to crown himself as king before his Father David got the

news. What he did not consider was that any plans against the kingdom would be brought

to David by his trusted advisors.

GOD’S PLAN WORKS TO THE ADVANTAGE OF HIS PEOPLE

1 Kings 1:15-17

15 So Bathsheba went to see the aged king in his room, where Abishag the Shunammite was attending him. 16 Bathsheba bowed low and knelt before the king.

"What is it you want?" the king asked.

17 She said to him, "My lord, you yourself swore to me your servant by the Lord your God: 'Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne.

NIV

1 Kings 1:29-30

29 The king then took an oath: "As surely as the Lord lives, who has delivered me out of every trouble, 30 I will surely carry out today what I swore to you by the Lord, the God of Israel: Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne in my place."

WHAT GOD HAS FOR YOU IS FOR YOU

According to the text, Solomon did not get involved in the conversation between

King David, the king's advisor, and Bathsheba, his mother. He allowed God

to establish him as king following his father’s death

God's plan for you does not change because others are against you.

God’s plan for you was put into effect, long before you were born.

When we place our lives in God’s hands, He works things out in our favor

WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND

1 Kings 1:50-51

But Adonijah, in fear of Solomon, went and took hold of the horns of the altar. 51 Then Solomon was told, "Adonijah is afraid of King Solomon and is clinging to the horns of the altar. He says, 'Let King Solomon swear to me today that he will not put his servant to death with the sword.'"

LOVE AND COMPASSION, THE CHARACTER OF A KING

CHILD

1 Kings 1:52-53

52 Solomon replied, "If he (Adonijah) shows himself to be a worthy man, not a hair of his head will fall to the ground; but if evil is found in him, he will die." 53 Then King Solomon sent men, and they brought him down from the altar. And Adonijah came and bowed down to King Solomon, and Solomon said, "Go to your home."

NIV

You don't have to do to others what they did to you. God works situations in your favor

before they become a problem. God commands us to love our enemies because He

loved us first.
