A WALK WITH JESUS Luke 24:13-32

 A WALK WITH JESUS

Luke 24:13-31

13 And behold, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was threescore furlongs from Jerusalem.

14 And they communed with each other of all these things which had happened.

15 And it came to pass, while they communed and questioned together, that Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.

16 But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.

17 And he said unto them, What communications are these that ye have one with another, as ye walk? And they stood still, looking sad.

18 And one of them, named Cleopas, answering said unto him, Dost thou alone sojourn in Jerusalem and not know the things which are come to pass there in these days?

19 And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:

20 and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him.

21 But we hoped that it was he who should redeem Israel. Yea and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things came to pass.

22 Moreover certain women of our company amazed us, having been early at the tomb;

23 and when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.

24 And certain of them that were with us went to the tomb, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.

25 And he said unto them, O foolish men, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!

26 Behooved it not the Christ to suffer these things, and to enter into his glory?

27 And beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

28 And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they were going: and he made as though he would go further.

29 And they constrained him, saying, Abide with us; for it is toward evening, and the day is now far spent. And he went in to abide with them.

30 And it came to pass, when he had sat down with them to meat, he took the bread and blessed; and breaking (it) he gave to them.

31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.

BACKGROUND

When you look at this situation, you will see history repeating itself in America today. These disciples had had a horrible weekend. They went to the Passover festival in Jerusalem and witnessed their beloved Jesus crucified. They knew Jesus was innocent of the crimes He was accused of. They knew the Jewish religious leaders had some how convinced the Roman government that Jesus committed crimes because they hated Him.

Jesus was innocent. He was guilty of telling the truth. He was guilty of casting out demons, healing the blind, the lame and all kinds of diseases. He was guilty of doing good on the Sabbath and breaking Jewish traditions.

He was a popular figure with a large following.  Crowds followed him

Because of the miracles He performed and He was guilty of His divine influence.

The Jewish religious leaders did not want the Jewish population to know the truth because it threatens their authority over them.

THE PLOT TO KILL JESUS

John 11:49 But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, 50 nor do ye take account that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.

The Jewish religious leaders were worried about keeping their traditions in place which allowed them control over their mistruths of the scriptures.

Matt 15:2-3

2 Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. And he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?

The week of the Passover festival was an excellent time to kill Jesus because the Jewish leaders knew He would be there.

Matt 26:3-5

3 At that same time the leading priests and elders were meeting at the residence of Caiaphas, the high priest, 4 plotting how to capture Jesus secretly and kill him. 5 "But not during the Passover celebration," they agreed, "or the people may riot."

THE CONTROL OF WICKNESS IN HIGH PLACES

You and I need to understand that we are not equipped to handle wickedness in high places. God is in control of all wickedness so that it will work out for our good. Jesus had told His disciples several times that He would be killed, but they would not hear it.

Matt 20:18 Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests and scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, 19 and shall deliver him unto the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify: and the third day he shall be raised up.

These disciples like all the rest heard the Word, but did not listen to understand. It is my belief that they did not ask Jesus to explain His

Statement.  Had they listened there would have been no need for their distress. They were sad and had lost hope because of their own lack of faith in Jesus.

LESSONS FROM THE TEXT

This text proves that there are some pain we cause ourselves. It is like the old gospel hymn, O WHAT PEACE WE OFTEN FORFIT ALL BECAUSE WE DO NOT CARRY EVERYTHING TO JESUS IN PRAYER. You and I are victims of our own beliefs of unbeliefs.

There are a number of lessons we can learn from this text.

JESUS IS IN THE MIDST OF YOUR TROUBLES

13 That same day two of Jesus' followers were walking to the village of Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 As they walked along they were talking about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus himself suddenly came and began walking with them.

  1. If the Word says it, take time to get an understanding of it. Believe if

it makes sense to you or not. These two disciples were walking back home sad, frustrated and confused by what had happen, Why?

  1. Jesus is in the midst and concern about everything pertaining to you,

Luke 24:13-16

When two are more are gathered in Jesus name He is in the midst; believe it. You can’t see Him but He is HERE. Notice it said and suddenly He was with them. Jesus is not ready to council with you

When you are driven by thoughts of the world, If you want the world’s advice, don’t call God. If you want God help, leave world out of it.

ASK YOURSELF QUESTIONS ABOUT SCRIPTURE

  1. Jesus does not always give you an answer immediately.

“Their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him “. It is my belief

That God wants us to spend time researching and meditating  on the Word. We must do the work of studying the scripture. The Holy Spirit is our teacher of The Word of God. But the Spirit can’t give us an understanding of the Word we do not consider. If there is nothing in your memory bank, He can’t explain a zero.

  1. We must ask ourselves questions about scripture. It is the questions that excites the research. It is the questions that Jesus is prepared to

Help us get an understanding.

*What are these words you are exchanging with one another?”

Why are you sad? What is troubling you?

Luke 24:18

Then one of them, Cleopas, replied, "You must be the only person in Jerusalem who hasn't heard about all the things that have happened there the last few days.

Sometimes we have so much going on, we can’t identify what is the source of our sorrow.  Jesus continues His investigation to help us understand our state of mind

Luke 24:19-20

19 "What things?" Jesus asked. "The things that happened to Jesus, the man from Nazareth," they said. "He was a prophet who did powerful miracles, and he was a mighty teacher in the eyes of God and all the people.

You can help anyone unless you know what they are dealing with.

It is what happen today, yesterday, or 10 years ago? What specifically is making you sad?

  1. Layout in your mind everything that troubles you about the main source of your sorrow.

Luke 24:20-21

But our leading priests and other religious leaders handed him over to be condemned to death, and they crucified him. 21 We had hoped he was the Messiah who had come to rescue Israel. This all happened three days ago.

The Jewish priest may have thought they were doing this evil secretly, but God made it known.

They were troubled that Jesus, an innocent man was crucified

They were troubled that their religious leader had it done

They were troubled because their hope for a Messiah was gone.

They were troubled because their hope for a rescue died

They were trouble because the bad guys won again

  1. Look for the good news in every situation.

They had the good news, but they would not believe it.

They had the good news, but they would believe the report because it came from the mouth of women.

Luke 24:22-24

"Then some women from our group of his followers were at his tomb early this morning, and they came back with an amazing report. 23 They said his body was missing, and they had seen angels who told them Jesus is alive! 24 Some of our men ran out to see, and sure enough, his body was gone, just as the women had said."

The two disciples only reflected on the part of the story that the men reported. There was more ,the men said women were foolish.

Luke 24:5-7

Then the men( angels)  asked, "Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is alive? 6 He isn't here! He is risen from the dead! Remember what he told you back in Galilee, 7 that the Son of Man must be betrayed into the hands of sinful men and be crucified, and that he would rise again on the third day.

They had the good news, they would believe it because the women were the first to report it. They made a choice to be sad. They made a choice to ignore the women's report which confirmed what Jesus said would happen that did happen.  They made a choice to not believe that Jesus was God and nothing was impossible for Him.

How many times have we made the choice not to believe scripture?

  1. Once you have done your research, take time and listen to the Lord.

Let the Lord enlighten you in the Word,

Luke 24:25-27

25 Then Jesus said to them, "You foolish people! You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures. 26 Wasn't it clearly predicted that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before entering his glory?"

Notice, Jesus call us foolish not to believe the Word of God we have in all the Scriptures of the Bible. It is foolish to make your own interpretation of events when you don’t know the whole story.

The Bible is not a hard book to read. It is a hard book to believe because we have all the lies of Satan. It is easy to believe what you can see and explain. It is easy to believe what your experience says

Can’t happen. The Bible is a book of extraordinary events written by an extraordinary God. As believers  we ought to expect extraordinary events to happen in our lives.

  1. Spend considerable time studying the whole Bible. The Old Testament is the history of Israel, God’s commands and the prophecies to come. The New Testament confirms the Old Testament along with good news of Jesus Christ

         Luke 24:27

Then Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the

prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning

         Himself.

There are no Words in the Bible that are not good for us to study.

          2 Tim 3:16-17

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true

and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when

we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to

prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

Each verse in the Bible speaks directly to you

  1. Invite Jesus into your Home.

We ought to make it a point to invite Jesus to come sit with us and eat the fresh fruits of grace and mercy He gives

Luke 24:28-31

28 By this time they were nearing Emmaus and the end of their journey. Jesus acted as if he were going on, 29 but they begged him, "Stay the night with us, since it is getting late." So he went home with them. 30 As they sat down to eat, he took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them. 31 Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And at that moment he disappeared!

  1. Jesus came in and visit with you anytime you open the door for Him.

  2. Jesus   will sat down and eat with you anytime you ask.

  3. Jesus is the blessing of your food

  4. When Jesus blesses your household your eyes will be open to His goodness and His presence

  5. Why did Jesus disappear?  I think is is because they saw him with their hearts

Luke 24:32-33

32 They said to each other, "Didn't our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?"

10. Share the good news about Jesus to others.

Your testimony is important to others

     Luke 24:33-34

And within the hour they were on their way back to Jerusalem. There

they found the eleven disciples and the others who had gathered with

them, 34 who said, "The Lord has really risen! He appeared to Peter."

You never know what people are going through. Sometimes they just

need a word of encouragement. All the disciples were suffering from

the same issues. They needed a reason to renew their hope and faith.

A PARTNERSHIP WITH JESUS Luke 5:1-14

                                A PARTNERSHIP WITH JESUS

                          Luke 5:1-11

The text in this lesson is Jesus choice of His disciples. Before Jesus

Started His teaching on the earth In Israel. They had been without a King for 400 years.  I want to give a brief background of the situation in Israel

Before Jesus stated His teaching.

INTRODUCTION TO THE TEXT

God has a way to make a whole nation call on Him for relief. In the past

God has allowed the oppression of the nation of Israel so that they prayed for His intervention. All throughout the Old Testament this was the case. God consistently gave Israel the same message

2 Chron 7:14 Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.

By the time of Jesus birth Israel had not had a king for 400 years. In 586 BC, because of  Israels sins, God sent Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon to destroy Israel, burn down the city and the temple and take the people

Captive. The last king from the line of David was killed in captivity.

In 63 BC the Roman empire under Pompey the Great captured Israel and Installed Herod the Great an Edomite ( a descendant of Esau) as King of the Jews.  He enlarged the temple and built a royal palace for himself. Jerusalem became the religious center and a metropolis. The Sanhedrin, the Jewish   council made of 70 elders required all Jews to make a yearly pilgrimage to the city and bring sacrifices for their sins.

The Jewish children starting at the age of 5 or 6 were required to study the

Torah, the first 5 books of the Bible. They were required   to attend Synagogue services on the Sabbath learning the Old Testament through adulthood.

Imagine Jewish men studying the Old Testament knowing that Israel was

A nation of 12 tribes promised by God to have a King on the throne from the line of David forever. In addition knowing the  prophecies from

Hundreds of years earlier predicted the  coming of a messiah (Isa 7:14, Micah 5:2, Daniel 7:13).  They were hopeful for that day.

The nation was oppressed by heavy taxes, limited freedom, and inaccurate interpretation of the Old Testament scriptures. By the time of Jesus the nation of Israel was ready for a King to dispose the Roman government. They were willing to take acting to restore Israel to God’s promise.

John 6:15 Jesus therefore perceiving that they were about to come and take him by force, to make him king, withdrew again into the mountain himself alone.

John 12:13 took the branches of the palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried out, Hosanna: Blessed (is) he that cometh in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel.

At the age of 30 Jesus picked 12 men as disciples who were waiting and hoping for a King. This brings us to our text.

THE TEXT

Luke 5:1-11

1 One day as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, great crowds pressed in on him to listen to the word of God. 2 He noticed two empty boats at the water's edge, for the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. 3 Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water. So he sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there.

4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish."

5 "Master," Simon replied, "we worked hard all last night and didn't catch a thing. But if you say so, I'll let the nets down again." 6 And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! 7 A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking.

8 When Simon Peter realized what had happened, he fell to his knees before Jesus and said, "Oh, Lord, please leave me—I'm too much of a sinner to be around you." 9 For he was awestruck by the number of fish they had caught, as were the others with him. 10 His partners, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were also amazed.

Jesus replied to Simon, "Don't be afraid! From now on you'll be fishing for people!" 11 And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus.

AN ENCOUNTER WITH JESUS IS ENLIGHTEN

Peter encountered Jesus on two previous occasions. Andrew, His brother introduced him to Jesus (John 1:35). Jesus healed Peter’s mother in law (Luke 4:38) the previous day.

Also on the day before, Jesus cast out demons and heal all the people

Who were brought to Him. Because of these events crowds began to follow Him.

WHY DID JESUS CHOOSE FISHERMEN?

  1. Fishermen have trained qualities useful in discipleship

  2. It takes courage, patience, persistence, and determination to work

In the seas, where conditions can change in a moment

  1. Fishermen must work together as a team to lower the net and pull the catch into the boat.

  2. They must maintain the boat, the nets and all equipment necessary for the job of catching fish.

  3. Disciples of Jesus must be trained to know the Gospel and how to proclaim it to those God place in their midst.

  4. There are different kind of fish in different environments that require different fishing techniques.

  5. There are different people from different backgrounds that need a message from God that identifies with their situation.

A DAY WITH JESUS IS LIFE CHANGING

Some time later Jesus was at the sea shore teaching the word of God

When He encountered Peter and his partners who had been fishing all night and caught nothing. Jesus can take your nothing day and make it extraordinary.

JESUS CHOSE YOU FIRST

There were two boats at the shore line. Jesus entered the one owned by Peter. He entered the boat, sat down and taught the crowd.

Jesus choice of you is deliberate and purposeful. There were two boats at the shore. Jesus chose Peter’s. Jesus chooses the best in us. He knows what we are capable of and how we will react to His commands. For certain tasks, Jesus chooses those who are leaders and have the right influence over others. Jesus knew Peter's family ties and his devotion to family.  God chooses working people to serve.

LET JESUS USE WHAT YOU HAVE

Peter was obedient to the command of Jesus. It was a small boat, probably smelled of fish and dirty. Jesus sat down and used it as His teaching platform.  When the teaching section ended, Jesus had some alone time with Peter.

You and I after the work of the day is done need to find alone time to talk with Jesus. He can reveal to us plans that includes His will for us. It is obvious that the best time to catch fish in the Sea of Galilee was at night.

From a fleshly point of view it wouldn’t make sense to repeat what failed

When Jesus is directing your plan, success is assured. Jesus commanded

Peter to let down the net. From his experience this was hopeless. By faith

In the Word ofJesus, Peter took the boat out and cast the net in the day time. Jesus controlled the feeding and the location of large a  number fish  to Peter and His partners nets. This was the largest catch they had had.  The catch was so large, that Peter call for help from his partners to bring the catch to shore.  The catch stretch  the limits of the net, the capacity of the two boats and strength of the men.

The size of the catch made Peter realize that this was a miracle of God. It

Reminded Peter of the scripture, that no man can see God and live.

The miracle catch made Peter aware of his sinfulness and the need to confess. The men had previously recognized Jesus as the messiah. They heard His teaching, witnessed His miracles yet were not fully convinced who He was. It was the catch that affected them personally that finally convinced them that Jesus was God or at least operating under the power of God.

Until Jesus does something personally amazing to us individually, we may not truly accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. God gives us  testimonies to

Strengthen our faith.

Peter amazed and fearful had to be comforted by the Lord. Fear not Peter, from now on you will be fishers of men. At Jesus' acknowledgement, Peter and his partners, James and John left their boats and followed Jesus.

Of course we know there must be more to the story that God does not tell us.  They had two boat loads of fish that had to be sold, traded, or prepared

For storage. Nothing God does for us is wasted.   The conversation with Jesus may have been more prolonged for them to walk away from their trade and means of support for their families.

AN ENCOUNTER WITH JESUS CHANGES DIRECTION AND PURPOSE

We know Jesus stance on family and His requirements to be His followers. His requirements takes a strong faith in Him to make the change. We are not told but I suggest that conversation between Peter, James and John

Was considerable longer than what’s in include in the text. God can change

Hearts and minds with the snap of his fingers, so nothing is impposssible for Him.

Luke 14:26-27

"If you want to be my disciple, you must hate everyone else by comparison—your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple. 27 And if you do not carry your own cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple.

We must take it literally that Peter, James and John left their profession and trusted Jesus to make away for their families to be taken care of. We do not

Have any indications that Jesus, His disciples or families went lacking or were in need doing the three years of discipleship.

The text points out several things that are important in our relationship with Jesus.

JESUS MEET YOU WHERE YOU ARE

  1. Jesus calls us when we have been exposed to the Word of God

Jewish boys from the age of 5 or 6 were trained in the Old Testament

The study of the Old Testament was continuous in the Synagogue

Every Sabbath day.

  1. Jesus meets us where we are. Jesus came to the work place of Peter,  James, and John. They were dirty, tired and disappointed. Dirty and tired because they had worked hard all night, Disappointed because they caught no fish.

They were troubled because of the oppression of the nation by the Roman empire. And may have been troubled by the misapplication

Of God’s Word by the Jewish hierarchy. They were waiting on the

Promised King of the Old Testament prophesies.

  1. They had been introduced to Jesus as the Messiah, heard his teaching and witnessed His miracles. But still was not sure who He was.

It was not until they had a personal testimony of their own that believed Jesus was the Messiah. It was not until they had an unsully

Large catch of fish orchestrated by Jesus that they knew Jesus and was prepared to follow Him

All of us need a personal testimony about the goodness of the Lord to strengthen our faith. Jesus taught from Peter’s boat, then stood watch when fish appeared from nowhere filled his net to the breaking point.

THERE MUST BE A TIME WHEN WE ACCEPT JESUS AS LORD

  1. Peter fell down at the feet of Jesus, worshipped Him and confessed his sins.  All of us must come to confession before Jesus each day.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God

  1. Blessings follow confession. From fear to joy. From failure to success,

From guilt to peace. From a relationship with the world, to a relationship with the almighty creator.

TRUSTING JESUS IS REWARDING

  1. When we let Jesus take charge of our lives He will bless us with more than we can conceive or imagine.

Peter with doubt in his mind, at Jesus command moved the boat back into the sea, and cast his net. He could not conceive what Jesus what

Jesus was had caused to be.  From no fish in the sea to an abundance at place the boat sat in the water.

Peter was amazed at the miracle Jesus performed. Each day God performs miracles in our lives. It good for us to get up each expecting God to amaze us with His works.

  1. Peter called James and John to help with the catch of fish. His influence was immediate. It was part of Peter's personality to

Speak up and let others know what was on his mind.

GOD VALUES PARTERSHIPS

  1. Peter, James and John were partners in fishing. It was a trade that was probably handed down from their fathers. They were dedicated to the trade working day and night to provide for their families.

  2. It was Peter who recognized Jesus as Lord first.  It was Peter who

Feared the Lord and humbly confessed his sins. It was Peter who the Lord gave peace first. It was Peter who Jesus said, I will make you fishers of men.

  1. It may have been Peter’s decision to leave his boat and follow Jesus

That influenced James and John to do the same.

  1. Jesus started His discipleship with partners. Jesus wants us to partner with Him in the Gospel.

SUCCESS IS ASSURED WHEN JESUS IS LORD

  1. The Word of God is like a net, cast wide will draw men to Jesus.

  2. When we partner with Jesus in lifting Him up all men will be drawn to Him

  3. We never know how many people we are influencing when we proclaim the name of Jesus.

  4. Success is assured when it is the will of Jesus and not our will
