GIVING; THE BUILDING
OF THE TABERNACLE
Exodus 35:20-29, 2 Cor 9:6-9
20 Then the whole Israelite community withdrew from Moses'
presence,
21 and everyone who was willing and whose heart moved him
came and brought an offering to the Lord for the work on the Tent of Meeting,
for all its service, and for the sacred garments.
22 All who were willing, men and women alike, came and
brought gold jewelry of all kinds: brooches, earrings, rings and ornaments.
They all presented their gold as a wave offering to the Lord.
23 Everyone who had blue, purple or scarlet yarn or fine
linen, or goat hair, ram skins dyed red or hides of sea cows brought them.
24 Those presenting an offering of silver or bronze brought
it as an offering to the Lord, and everyone who had acacia wood for any part of
the work brought it.
25 Every skilled woman spun with her hands and brought what
she had spun — blue, purple or scarlet yarn or fine linen.
26 And all the women who were willing and had the skill spun
the goat hair.
27 The leaders brought onyx stones and other gems to be
mounted on the ephod and breastpiece.
28 They also brought spices and olive oil for the light and
for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense.
This entire passage is the result of a command from God to
the Nation of Israel to
contribute all of the articles to build a Tabernacle for
worship. The articles listed
above were brought out Egypt
when the people were released from slavery.
Ex 25:1-9
Notice the contributions were voluntary from those who had a
willing heart.
The tabernacle, once constructed, represented salvation
which is obtained through
Jesus Christ. The
voluntary offering is a forerunner to Jesus voluntary offering
of Himself on the cross for the atonement of our sins.
Notice in the offering God requires all that we have.
Our minds: Willing
heart
Our resources: All of
the articles for building the Tabernacle.
Our skills: Skills
of building, carving and weaving of material
Our Labor: men and
women
All of the articles for the building of the Tabernacle had
symbolic references
to Christ. The following symbolism has been suggested.

6 Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap
sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.
7 Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to
give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that
in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every
good work.
In this passage the success of Christian living is based on
our giving. Giving must be
done with a willing and cheerful and loving heart.
The promise of giving is all grace abounding to the giver in
all things and at all times.
The cheerful giver is under the favor of God.
The cheerful giver will have success in his/her relationships
and works.
The cheerful giver will be provided everything he/she needs
Our failure to give is one of the reasons for the troubles and discontentment
in our lives.
At the start of God's nation, He established giving as one
of the priorities
for successful living.
