THE LIFE OF JESUS
Luke 2:25-36
THE
ANNOUNCEMENT OF HIS DEDICATION
V:25 Now
there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He
was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26
It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he
had seen the Lord's Christ. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple
courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the
custom of the Law required, 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God,
saying:
A. When you are devoted to God you will
find HOPE in His Word.
1. Simeon knew the Word and relied on
its truths.
2. He had faith in the promised messiah.
3. His soul rested in the Word of God.
B. He was filled with the Holy Spirit.
1. He had the gift of discernment
2. He knew his salvation when Jesus was brought
into the
Temple.
3. He was a praying man.
4. Simeon was constant in prayer that he
would see the Lord of his salvation
Before his death.
C. He had the gift of Encouragement,
1. We use our gifts through the guidance
of the Holy Spirit.
2. When Mary and Joseph came into the temple
to dedicate
The baby Jesus, encouraged
them with a word of Hope.
3. That is our job to encourage each other with the message
Of hope of our eternal
life with the Father.
D. Now that we have come to know Jesus,
we should give the Lord praise.
THE
MISSON OF JESUS
V:29
"Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,
you now
dismiss your servant in peace.
30 For my
eyes have seen your salvation,
31 which you
have prepared in the sight of all people,
32 a light
for revelation to the Gentiles
and for
glory to your people Israel."
A. He reminded Mary and Joseph of the
purpose of their blessing.
1. He was in the temple to see the
promised Savior
And remind Mary of Joseph
who their baby was.
2. Simeon time on earth had come to an
end with this
One last mission
3. He was to remind Mary and Joseph of
the mission of Jesus
B. Jesus would be the salvation of the
gentile a new revelation to the
The nation of Israel.
1. He would be the salvation of Israel
and the glory of God to
Israel.
2. Jesus was prepared for the mission.
THE
PARENTS ENCOURGMENT
V:33 The
child's father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon
blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: "This child is destined to
cause the falling and rising of many in Israel and to be a sign that will be
spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a
sword will pierce your own soul too."
A. Simeon was gifted with prophecy
Isaiah 8:14
and he will be a sanctuary, but
for both houses of Israel he will be
a stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.
1. Mary and Joseph needed the encouraging
Word from the Lord.
2. They were forced to travel 90 miles
by donkey while Mary was
In her ninth month of pregnancy.
3. They got to Bethlehem and found no place
to stay.
4. Mary had given birth not in a
comfortable bed but on the floor
Of a cave.
5. She gave birth not in a home around
friends and relatives, but in a
Cave with animals
B. It would appear that God had forgotten
to make suitable accommodation for
His Son.
1. God's ways are not our ways. His
thoughts are not our thoughts.
2. All of this would certainly be
discouraging for a new mother.
3. Adverse circumstances can make you doubt
the power of God.
4. The Greek meaning for marvel is to
admire or wonder.
5. For Mary and Joseph to marvel at the words
of Simeon, may have meant they were encouraged.
6. Or they may have marveled because the
information about Jesus was only
Given by the angel to
them.
C. Notice verse 34 and 35 are directed
more toward Mary than Joseph.
1. Simeon’s insight may indicate that
Joseph would not live to see the crucifixion of
Jesus.
2. Simeon’s last statement was a sword
would pierce Mary’s soul.
3. Each of us is called by God for a
specific time and purpose.
4. Joseph completed the family unit for
Jesus.
a. As Mary’s husband, he provided for
her support.
b. He was the earthly father for Jesus
and provided the fatherhood
Role model for others to
see.
5. We should use our time on earth to
glorify God with the gifts and talents
He has provided.
6. It does not matter what others do,
but what you do for Christ.
THE
PURPOSE OF HIS DEATH
John
12:23-27
V:23 Jesus
replied, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 I tell
you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it
remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25 The man
who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world
will keep it for eternal life. 26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I
am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.
A. This text is 33 years later than the
previous one.
1. Ecclesiastes 3:2-3
There is a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time
to uproot.
2. The mission of Jesus on earth is nearing
completion.
3. His glorification was His death on the
cross
4. The process of death to
glorification is likened to a seed planted in the
ground.
a. The farmer buries the seed in the ground.
b. After a short time the seed produces roots
that anchor it’s self in the
ground
c. The seed produces a shoots up out of
the ground pointed toward the
sun.
B. Likewise when
a man dies, his body returns to dust in the form which it came.
1. His spirit returns to the Lord from
which it came.
a. We must hate this life and look forward to
a life with Jesus in
heaven.
I do not mean being unappreciative for what God
is doing, but in
hope for our eternal
life with Christ.
b. We must die to self to be born again to
Christ.
c. Salvation is in the faith we have in Jesus’
death and resurrection.
d. Jesus was born to die
e.
Likewise, we were born to die.
f. Like a tree, we must be anchored in the
Lord Jesus.
C. We
honor the Father with our love for the Son
1. The evidence of our love is
obedience to God’s commands.
2. While on earth our mission is to
glorify the Father with our service.
THANK YOU
JESUS FOR SALVATION
