WORSHIP ACCORDING TO GOD’S WILL
Leviticus 10:1-7
CONSEQUENCES
OF FAILURE TO FOLLOW GOD’S COMMANDS
V:1. Aaron's sons Nadab and Abihu took their
censers, put fire in them, and added incense; and they offered unauthorized
fire before the Lord, contrary to his command. 2 So fire came out from the
presence of the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord.
A. The office of the priesthood was an
anointed divine position set aside by the Lord.
1. The priest represented the
righteousness of God before the nation of
Israel.
2. The office of the priesthood was set
aside to make intersessions for the Nation.
3. They interceded for the people to
make atonement for their sins.
4. The priesthood represented Jesus
Christ as the intercessor before God.
B. Aaron and His sons were God’s first
priests.
1. They were members of the tribe of Levites.
2. All priests were to come from the
Levite tribe.
3. The priest's clothing was
specifically designed by the Lord.
4. God anointed skilled people to manufacture
the priest's clothing.
Exodus 35:19
the woven garments are worn for ministering in
the sanctuary — both the sacred garments for Aaron the priest and the garments
for his sons when they serve as priests."
NIV
Exodus 40:12-14
"Bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting
and
wash them with water. 13 Then dress
Aaron in the sacred garments,
anoint him and consecrate him so
he may serve me as a priest.
The Lord God did several
things before the beginning of the worship services
1. He Gave Moses His Law.
2. He designed and selected skilled craftsmen
to build the Tabernacle.
3. He set aside the Levite tribe as His
priest.
God established the
worship procedures that were to be performed by the priest.
God gave us a Prototype of the Church.
God’s Word, given to Moses
God’s Sanctuary, the tabernacle
God’s Priest, the Levites
God The Father, the creator
God the Son, the Word
God the Holy Spirit, the Tabernacle
C. You cannot Worship God your way.
1. According to the Adam Commentary,
God intended that every part of
his service be conducted; and that every sacrifice might
be acceptable to him.
2. God sent his own fire as the emblem
of his presence, and the means of
consuming the sacrifice.
3. Here we find Aaron's sons neglecting
the divine ordinance, and offering incense with strange, that is, common fire, fire
not of a celestial origin; and therefore the fire of God consumed them.

NOT MY WILL BUT GOD’S WILL
1. Our ways lead to death.
2. Two of Aaron's sons decided to ignore
God’s directive on sacrifice.
3. Leviticus 10:1
The manner of burning incense in the
temple service was, according to the Jews, as follows: "One went and
gathered the ashes from off the altar into a golden vessel, a second brought a
vessel full of incense, and a third brought a censer with fire, and put coals
on the altar, and he whose office it was to burn the incense strewed it on the
fire at the command of the governor.

4. Aaron sons offered up incense to God
without a sacrifice for the people.
5. The burning of the incense was not at
the altar.
6. They ignored their father, Aaron, the
high priest.
7. A confession of sins and a ritual
washing were not performed.
8. The office of the priesthood did not
provide for a private ceremony.
GOD
DEMANDS OUR HONOR
V:3 Moses
then said to Aaron, "This is what the Lord spoke of when he said:
"'Among
those who approach me
I will show
myself holy;
in the sight
of all the people
I will be honored.'"
Aaron
remained silent.
1. Aaron had to show strength and bear
his grief internally.
2. Aaron had to stay silent because he
could not condone the actions
Of his sons.
3. Any outward show of grief would show his
disrespect for God wrath
Toward his dead sons.
4. God’s wrath is designed to draw us into
His righteousness and accept
Responsibility for our actions.
THE
RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CONGREGATION
V:4 Moses
summoned Mishael and Elzaphan, sons of Aaron's uncle Uzziel, and said to them,
"Come here; carry your cousins outside the camp, away from the front of
the sanctuary." 5 So they came and carried them, still in their tunics,
outside the camp, as Moses ordered.
A. God killed Aaron’s sons immediately because they
dishonored Him with
Their unauthorized actions.
1
God
assigned Aaron's cousins to take Aaron's sons outside the tent of the meeting for
burial.
2
Aaron
and his two remaining sons were not allowed to leave the tent of
The meeting.
B.
God showed His uncompromising demand for righteousness with the death of
Aaron’s sons.
1. He brought fear in the eyes of Israel
taking Aaron’s dead Son’s out
in their priest robes to
be buried.
2. God is no respecter of a person.
3. We all stand under God’s judgment.
4. Position or status does not free us
from God’s punishment when we sin.
UNDER
GOD’S COMMAND TO BE STRONG
V.6 Then
Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, "Do not let your
hair become unkempt and do not tear your clothes, or you will die and the Lord
will be angry with the whole community.
A. The anointed priests must not mourn. Aaron
and his two surviving sons, though sad in spirit, could
not use any outward expressions of
sorrow upon this sad occasion, nor so much as follow the
corpse one step from the door of the
tabernacle.
1. We are taught, when we are serving
God in holy duties, to keep out minds, as much as may be, intent and engaged,
and not to suffer them to be diverted by any worldly thoughts, or cares, or
passions. Let us always attend to the Lord without distraction.
2. Aaron's sons were cut off for their
transgression by the immediate hand of God, and therefore they could not mourn
for them lest they should seem to countenance the sin or impeach the justice of
God in the punishment.

THE RESPONSIBILITY
OF THE CONGREGATION
V:6
b. But your relatives, all the house of Israel, may mourn for those the Lord
has destroyed by fire.
1. Every believer is important in the
service of God.
2 The
Priest have their function.
3 The congregation
have their function.
4
God left the sorrows and the politics to other family members and
The congregation.
5
This
left the priest to their duties of sanctifying the congregation.
6
Compare this to the establishment of the office
of the Deacons
Acts 6:3-4
Choose
seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom.
We will turn this responsibility over to
them 4 and will give our attention to prayer and
the ministry of the word.
PRAY FOR
YOUR PASTORS
V:7 Do not
leave the entrance to the Tent of Meeting or you will die because the Lord's
anointing oil is
on you." So they did as Moses
said.
A. The honor given Priest must be
carefully preserved by doing the duty of the office with cheerfulness.
1. Those that through
grace have received the anointing ought not to disturb themselves with
the sorrow of the world, which worketh
death.
2. It was very hard, no
doubt, for Aaron and his sons to restrain themselves upon such an
extraordinary occasion from inordinate
grief, but reason and grace mastered the passion,
and they bore the affliction with obedient
patience.
3.They did according to
the word of Moses because they knew it to be the word of God.
B. Happy are those who trust themselves
under God's government and have their passions under their own government.

C. How blessed we are to have
Pastors who can maintain their composure when we are
Grieving the loss of loved ones.
1. They are the first we call when we have a loss.
We are blessed when they give us
comfort and counseling doing times of trouble.
2. Our prayers must continue for them.
3. It is our duty to pray for their strength
in the Lord.
4. We must keep the Pastor wives in prayer
because they endure the same pain
And grief as they support
their husbands.

Mitchell
